I have an M, SN 54894. Makes it a 1942. I thought that a Mag should have been on this tractor, not distributer ignition.

What was the problem with the Mags? I am running a 42 and 44 H with the original mags, after changing the coils which were a little weak to start with. No problems and they will start with a dead battery. I have an extra rebuilt mag and am thinking about putting it on a Super M or 450, it will fit won`t it?

Nothing realy wrong with mags but most found distribitor cheaper and easier to maintain. I have several mags that my Dad pulled off and replaced with distribitor. When tractor was acting up and he needed to be in field he did not have time to tinker with magneto so he just went by salvage yard picked up distribitor and coil and was running in hour or so. When tractor went down for any reason during planting or harvest season it had to fixed fast. Have seen Dad overhaul M transmission in field and be back running in less than day.

Most of the mags were changed while the tractors were still working, not show tractors. Most farmers money was pretty tight. I remeber from when I was still living on the farm in the 60s, a mag coil cost about 4 times what a distributor coil did and only lasted half as long.

The "battery ignition package" IH sold as an upgrade--which dealers sold by the truckloads (I remember it being $27.50 in the 1960's)--made it almost impossible to determine which H's and M's came out with magneto ignition and which ones didn't. The exception to that being...the tractors sold without starter, generator, and lights HAD to have mag ignition. Not sure what was the first year that the IH distributor was available--maybe Guy Fay or Hugh MacKay can answer that--but I've rarely seen an H or M after about '41 that still had a mag, unless it also lacked starter and lights.

From anything I've seen, the battery ignition unit was available some time in 1950. Any tractor older than that would have had to be a conversion.

Most had mags. Far as I know a distributer was always an option. Could have been converted to distributer, also.
