I have a 1968 125 Cub Cadet. Since I have had it, 2-3 years, it has always been hard to start. I have other mowers so I just haven't used it much. It fires and almost starts, but seems to be fighting itself. It also makes a high pitched "popping" sound as it fires. Sometimes it also backfires? (flame comes out the exhaust). What is the chance it is a head gasket, and if so, can a novice make the repair?
Thanks for any help.

Sounds like a sticking exhaust valve. I had that problem with my 125 too. I found that a little Marvel Mystery Oil in the gas helps a lot. Pull the head off first & clean the carbon out and make sure it's not burned valve. Those engines have a reputation for sticky/burned exhaust valves.

Just a piece of information here. I got a service manual from Kohler and it is very good. The cost was about $13 I think. I just looked up Kohler engines on the net and ordered it online. If you find a need for the manual at least you can get one and know it is good.

I also have an older cub cadet model 106 and would like to find a sickle bar mower for it. Did you have any luck?

Just logged on and had a question...

Over the weekend, I purchased at a garage sale,
a Cub Cadet 125 with a snowblower, rake, snowplow, mower deck and a yard vacuum for $650.
It reportedly had $700 of repairs done on it 5 yrs ago.

I do not know what these are worth. Any guesses?

That's right...I forgot about doing that. I started to do that and decided to go ahead and order the book as I thought the price was reasonable. Printing out selected pages and using them instead of the book while working on the engine would sure make to book stay in better shape.

sounds like a stuck compression release. The KOhler engine has an automatic one that is part of the valve timing. Probably need a manual.

You may have sticking or burned / carboned-up valves. I'd pull the head and take a look. Not a difficult job.
