I know this is off the normal topic but I need some advise. I live in Northen MN. (Brainerd MN area) and I am going to plant a hayfield. Going to plant - timathy - mix in some alphafa - and brome. I will plant oats as a cover and cut that for hay this year. My question is, "is it to early to do this the week of April 19 or the week of May 3rd"? Will the oats dye if it sprouts and then get a frost? thanks John

John, We just finished planting approximately 20 acres in Alfalfa on friday April 9th. We had corn on this ground last year. We kept watching the soil change and when it seemed ok to work the ground, we went to work. Chisel plowed it, Disc'ed it down several times, (had two disc's going over it multiple times) Harrowed it smooth and broadcast it along with some lime and map. Now to wait and see. Good luck to you!

Here in central Mo. just as soon as we can get into the field in the spring that's when we would plant the oats. Snow and frost don't hurt the oats. Sound like your going to have some fun with your old tractors.

I was born and raised in St. Cloud. Nice place to be from... it wasn't the cold winters that drove me out, it was the humid summers and all the deer flys, gnats, etc.

Ask your local people like the place you get your seed they are up to the task as what works best in you area. How did your soil test come out do you need lime, fertilizer and what goes best there. OATS hay is good feed if cut at the right time. The grass probably wont make a crop this year unless you direct seed without cover crop. Ask your local people they know your deal the best and can advise you better.

You can't plant oats too early. dads saying was "April for oats, May for straw"

as long as you can work the ground and it isn't toowet then it's ok.I've had oats get snowed on after planting -alot of oldtimers call it poor mans fertilizer won't hurt a thing
