I just inherited a IH Farmall 400 from my aunt. She believes it is a 400 but the tag on the bell housing isn't in good enough shape to give me a model. Looking at the photo's on this site an other sites, it looks like a 400 or a 450. Its a gas engine and I have figured out how to check the engine oil level but am not sure about the trans and differential level fluid. I have been looking at getting a repair manual but I have to move the thing in a couple of days. Is there a page or place where I can get what the oil needs to be, where I check and add it, along with other technical information? Eventually I will restore it but for now I just need enough information to make sure I don't burn it up while moving it.

Thanks for the information. I checked the engine and it does have a C264 right on the block. I drove it into town yesterday from out on the farm and, other than a couple of small leaks, it did wonderful. Now I have to get used to using the bucket again. Its been a while.

Get yourself an operators manual. They are cheap.
I think it's the same for both the 400 and the 450. About 15 gallons (U.S.). Drain the tranny and diff. (plugs on the bottom)
there is also a plug towards the middle of the tractor. Not much will come out but it's good to get rid of any source of contamination. Loosen the belt pulley cover also and let the water out of there also.
Let it drain a LONG time, then fill it through the triangular shaped plate on the top of the housing by the shifter. (right about where your right foot would rest) Use trademark HY-TRAN to fill it with. Be prepared to spend about a hundred bucks to change it out, but it's worth it to your torque amplifier.
good luck

I have heard a couple of different stories about the transmission oil. You state to use IH HY-TRAN to fill it with and the repair shop my uncle used to take it to stated to use 80w-90. My book won't be here for a week or so and I checked the level and I need to add some oil. Is HY-TRAN simply 80w-90 or is it a special blend?
