I took the waterneck header off and noticed the spring coil is cracked on the thermostat. It looks however like the thermostat has tiny rivets attaching to the wtaerneck header. Is this right? Should I simply pull like hell and see if it will come out? Please advise. Thanks.

The thermostat has a neck which sticks down into the housing it is an inch and a quarter or half if i remember right. It is just stuck you can wiggle it out.

Aaron –

The thermostat just sits inside the gooseneck. However they tend to get bonded in pretty good by corrosion after a while.

Fortunately the thermostat is made from soft, thin brass. Best way to get it out is to go at it with a chisel or sharp screwdriver and just sorta peel the old thermostat apart. Be sure to get it all the old one out and the counterbore in the lower housing cleaned up before you stick in the new thermostat…
