I will be changing the trans-hydraulic oil in my 686 within the next few weeks. AgriSupply sells a trans-hydraulic fluid they say meets or exceeds the specs. of Hy-Tran for about half the price. Does the Hy-Tran have additives that the others don't. What are your opinions of the lower cost oil. This tractor has a T/A and will not be doing hard work.

Hi, I run an oil testing lab. If it says that it meets or excedes specs, then it probably does. If it is licensed then it is occassionly checked by some agency. The API does a yearly audit of licensed motor oils. If it doesn't specifiy that it meets some spec and bear a logo of sorts, I would stay away from it. The chemistry is pretty much all the same, but with the hydrostatic systems the particle size is what is important. I do believe that the servo valves require oil with less than 10 micron size
of particulates to function properly. Additives in the oil therefore need to be smaller than 10 micron or you will starve the system pumps.

Jones I can only tell what I know to be true. Back in the 60's & 70's when we had engine problems with some IH engines the IH #1 engine oil fixed the problems. Not all oils are created equal.

Respectfully, I agree sir, but someone made that oil for IH and probably made (refined) a lot of other oil also. It was what it was probably because of it's spec and that is what is on the back of after market containers that make (they say) oil suitable for most every spec (those listed). Now, I don't know who the regulatory agency might be that keeps all these guys honest. I realize that there could be some overzealous (dishonest? naw) sales forces that could misrepresent their products.

Let's think a minute. Ford makes cars and trucks. I don't know of a Ford Motor Company oil refinery.

Oil companies make oil to customers specifications. Is there only one oil company (the one that packages Ford Oil) that can read and test to a spec? I think not.

Enjoy your "trans/hyd" oil with 25 specs on the back.

Lets think again....Case-IH DOES have its own oil refinery. It is called Viscosity Oil. Hytran may cost more but it does have more additives than the "cheaper" oils.

Buy what you like, but if you have hyd oil trouble later..... you'll know why.

Viscosity Oil was sold by Pennzoil in 2000 to FL Selenia.

FL is owned by Vestar Capital Partners, which acquired the company in October, 2003. FL had previously been acquired by Doughty-Hanson in April, 2000. FL was formerly Fiat Lubrificante, the lubricants division of Fiat.

In 1985 Tenneco bought Viscosity Oil. What happened beteewn Tenneco ownership and Pennzoil owenership I don't know.

I'm going to agree with Ken on this one. My Dad and I have both seen the time when aftermarket oil would not hold up--change it to Hy-tran and you will be sure that it's not the oil causing a problem. Keep in mind--oil is cheap compared engines and hydraulics and the lost time you may have someday when chasing down a problem. Just my thoughts.
