Hi red guys. I only know a little bit of the IH world. What is the axle shaft diameter on a Farmall H? M? I see some H tractors had spoked wheels? Were they origanally steel wheels? Did just early ones have these? What about Ms? I like the looks of them and was curious. Clue me in. I collect MM tractors but always like to see red with the old spoke wheels.

Here in Western , Pa. it isn't uncommon to see MM's on steel as well as Farmall 400 and 450's.
Almost all of the Amish use nothing but steel wheeled tractors. It has something to do with being grounded to the earth. That I don't understand though because they ride in vans to do jobs.

Most of the Hs and Ms with spoke wheels are WW II tractors they came on steel (because of rubber shortage) and steel wheels were later cut off and wheels for tires welded on. They did not come from factory with rubber tires and spoke wheels.

You might see SMTA with spoke wheels and a 1939 with Stage II Super hydraulics what some seem to forget is that over 50/60 years service that a lot of parts swapping has gone on. Very few of the Hs and Ms are 100% original.

Did the M come with spoke rims? I have seen pictures of H's with rims. Any history on spoke rims on a H or M would be helpfull.

The H-M Farmalls were introduced in '39, and came in a variety of configurations. Some came on rubber, others on steel. When WWII came along, rubber parts eventually became harder to obtain, and IH (as well as other manufacturers) built a lot of tractors on steel, even though most farmers wanted rubber tires.
I have a '43 H that my Dad bought new in that year. Rubber tires were generally not available at that time. It not only came on steel, but has a cast-iron shift knob, and a steel (not aluminum) "Farmall" plate on the front end. No starter, lights, or battery, either. He farmed with it that way until the summer of '44, when he got a permit to put rubber tires on the front. Two old car tires were put on the front end. When he got approval to buy rear tires, the spokes were cut and a rim welded in place. About that time he also installed battery, starter, lights, and distributor ignition. The rear wheels were cut by torch in a jig that held the steel wheel in a horizontal position and allowed it to rotate as the spokes were cut. The new rim was then positioned and welded. There is almost no wobble to the assembly.

My 41 M has spokes and the steel ball for the gear shift knob. Wasn't too sure if it was an add on until now, thanks for clearing that up. My 2 cents.

I think my grandpa has one of these jigs and he's VERY good with a torch and welder. Hmmmmm. I am building a Twin City J for pulling. Most of those had 36" welded on the spokes and the center hubs look real heavy! An H spoked wheel would bolt right up if the key was the same. Maybe I'm commiting treason here. Haha. It is a pile of parts from about four different tractors at the moment.

H had 2-1/2" dia. axles, M had 2-3/4" dia. axles. Both had two keyways 180 deg. apart.
