4 simple Questions:

1) Is this a Pos. or Neg. ground tractor?

2) Is the stock tractor 6v or 12v? (im guessing 6v)

3) This tractor is wired Pos. ground,12v and I am wondering why, when the key is on, doesnt the starter spin if I have 12v on the starter terminal. I've tried using a jumper from the battery to the starter, in case the push-button was bad, and still nothing. I know for a fact that the case of the starter is grounded.

4) What the heck is the round gizzmo that is on the right side of the engine block about the same hieght as the crankshaft. Its about 1 1/2 inches round. It has 2 wires going to it. One from the oil filter canister mounting bolt and the other back to the Ammeter/light switch box near the driver. I'm baffled on this one.

ANY HELPFUL COMMENTS WOULD BE APPRECIATED, thanks..... Monique

Take a 3/4" wrench and loosen the starter bolts all most out, take a hold of the back of the starter and see if you can move it. If it is locked you may be able to free it that way . There is no reason to take the starter out unless you are going to overhaul it. Try that and see if it helps. Boyd

Your M was 6 volt positive ground originally. If you know the battery is good, the starter is either bad or locked up (they have a history of doing that). You can try rocking the tractor back and forth in high gear to see if the starter is still engaged with the ring gear. Or, loosen the starter mounting bolts to free it. Since you are running a 12 volt system, the starter may be bad now. They're tough, but won't last forever. You might need to remove the starter and have it tested and or repaired.
What you're describing on the right side I'm unsure. Sounds like size-wise, it could be the coil, but the connections are not right for a coil. Can you get a picture?

Ok, but wouldnt the starter be making SOME noise if it was locked up? I will take the advise of all and remove the starter. Will it be alright to put it in a vise and bump it with 12volts, or will this throw out the bendix and render it useless?

Thanks,
M

It won't hurt anything. Just make sure it's secure in the vise without over-doing it.

The round gizzmo is a pressure sw that shuts off the alt when the engine is not running so the battery doesent run down. Better take the starter out as it mite be locked on the ring gear. Of course the starter is grounded. When new the tractor was 6v pos gnd.

Monique;

I had to shim my starter out to keep it from locking up. Used shims cut from pop cans. Tractor had been converted to 12 volt and an electronic ignition kit installed. Never had starter problems after that.1939 M
