Have a new motor in a 1948 H. Been trying to dial in the carb I rebuilt with little luck. Can only get it to run with the choke closed. Tried to turn in the idle screw to give it less air as I open the choke but still getting too much. Was wondering if the mainjet could be sucking air too. Have a new mainjet that came with a piece of packing. Where does the packing go? Tried to adjust by the sequence they give in the manual but didn't work either. Starting with the mainjet 3 turns out and the idle screw 1 turn out. Turned the govenor control screw to open the butterfly slightly until the rpm picked up a bit, but still can't get it dialed in. Valves are OK at 0.017. Also, can you replace the clutch shaft seal without splitting the tractor. Looks like you may be able to remove the u-joint type knuckle from the under side to get at it. Leaking gear oil bad from the differential around the clutch shaft. Mostly only when in reverse. Probably another original leather seal. Thanks for the help.

With the engine warm & running at wide open throttle (WOT), turn high speed mixture screw in until the engine begins to starve for fuel. Then turn the screw out until it begins to blubber. Now find the "sweet spot" in between the two settings. If you are working the engine (plowing, etc.), then the high speed screw needs to be turned out 1 turn or more to be sure the engine isn't running lean.
The same proceedure can be followed for idle mixture with the addition of the ldle stop screw to set the low speed RPM. On the "H" carb, the idle mixture screw is an air adjusting screw so turning in will richen the mixture and out will lean the mixture.

Did you have the choke plate out of the carb?? I put one in incorrectly on a Cub I worked on once so when I pulld the choke rod out I was actually opening the choke.

Doug � Sounds like either there�s a flow of fuel restriction into the bowl (junk in the sediment bowl or plugged carb inlet screen), or else there�s a blockage in the main metering jet/nozzle.

Try removing the bowl drain plug. You should get a continuous, solid stream of gas from the opening. If not, check the sediment bowl and inlet screens. If you get good flow out of the bowl drain then look for something caught in the float needle. Also check for the float binding in the bowl and holding the float needle shut.

The tranny input shaft seal can be replaced without splitting the tractor. The U-joint can be disassembled and the tranny half of the U-joint removed � the seal and retainer then slide easily off the shaft. While you are in there suggest also replacing the belly pump drive shaft seal at the same time. If it hasn�t begun leaking yet, it will the moment you get the input shaft seal fixed!
