Low Oil Pressure on H

My H has very low oil pressure according to the gauge. Once the tractor gets hot it shows hardly none. The tractor doesnt smoke and seems to be very strong under a load.(although no hard load has been put on it for long periods) I would like to fix this problem if there is one before it causes me to lose the engine. Any suggestions will be very helpful on where to start or what to look for on the oil pump for problems? Thanks

The first thing that I would do, is replace the gauge, maybe even put a pounds gauge in, instead of the original IH gauge, then if the oil pressure was low, I would start checking the oil pump, and bearings, after I made sure that it had good oil and filter in it.

I agree, I've replaced several old gauges they often seem to read low oil pressure when they fail. Borrow or rent a qaulity oil pressure test gauge to check the oil pressure before you start tearing things apart. If it tests low than start with the oil pump then move to the bearings and so on.

There can be several problems: Bad oil Pressure regulating vale & Spring, Shot oil pump, excessive oil clearances on the crankshaft or camshaft. Personally I would start with inspecting the rods & mains and plastigauging the journals to see if the oil clearance is over 0.003" It is also wise to take the bottom plate off of the oil pump to inspect the wear to the oil pump, and check the condition of the pressure regulating valve. If the problem is major, then you will at a minimum be looking at having the crankshaft reground, and new camshaft bearings installed.
