How bad did I mess up?

I was tearing apart an H4 magneto and after I got the disc with the impulse springs and weights off i decided to soak the 4 big flat screws with PB Blaster. it looked to me like someone had put dirt in the oil fill spot instead of oil. i had the mag positioned so that the screws were facing up. well, needless to say all the blaster went through the whole magneto and out the distributor cap. now the shaft is very hard to turn. how bad is this magneto screwed up? thanks for the advice.

I wouldn't give up just yet. Did the mag work before, in other words, do you know the coil was good when you started "fixing" the mag?

The coil windings are enameled, and I doubt PB would hurt that. The outer wrap of the coil is probably a more "tarry" stuff that the PB may have loosened a bit, and it may be gumming things up. I would remove the coil, and set it in a warm, ventilated area for a while, so the Blaster finishes evaporating, and clean out the rest of the mag with solvent, and dry thoroughly with compressed air. Re-lube the bearings, and reassemble, and I'll bet the coil will work, if it was OK before. Do you have mag instructions, or have you looked at the manual the good folks at the Cub site have posted?

The mag worked before except the impulse spring was bad. it was really dirty and rusty in there though. i will try and clean it out like you said and thanks for the link to the manual. i know a couple of guys who should have one if i need another one cause they pull tractors and change away from a mag as soon as they get a tractor. i will see what i can do with it though first, i really don't have anything to loose and i can learn something in the process. thanks!

Don't know for sure but I think you will probably need to get a new/rebuilt one now. The PB probably destoryed the windings on that mag. Check with magneeders.com or there phone number I'm sure he can tell you 417-358-7863
