Hi All,

Say, can you fellas give me your assesment of the German 310D engine? (Hope I've got that right).

I've never been around one; are they any good? What kind of longevity could a guy expect?

Thanks,

Allan

We had a 686 with a D-310 for about 7 years. In that time we put about 2,500 hrs. on it, for a total of 6400 hrs. when we traded it off last year. We never had to do any work on the engine, and neither did the previous owners, who I know. It had good power, and by the Nebraska Tractor Test info I have, a 686 with the D-310 is the most fuel-efficient IH tractor under 150 hp. in terms of horsepower-hours per gallon. My one complaint- it was a horrible engine to start in cold weather.

hey allan, did you get the 70? my 86 has the 312 engine which is supposed to be "bullet proof" but the tractor only has 3900 total hours on it and has a reman motor in it????? ????? ? somebody must have done something bad wrong to it when it was nearly new. the number 1200 is scratched into the paint by the tachometer. it is anybodys guess how long they will last but realy 10,000 hours without an overhaul is not uncommon in most of the older IH engines. I hope the german 310 is as good.

Well, not yet; still trying to make up my mind.

The 70 is in perfect shape but is a gasser; kinda spendy on the fuel nowadays.

I just remember back when I was farming and had all those IH's with the diesel engines.

Never a problem with any of 'em; and I also have heard that they will run for 10K hours before having to crack the bolts.

I think I need a different hobby, collecting horse-shoes, maybe? Less stressful on my old pee-brain.

Later

just to play with a hydro gasser would be ok i guess. i missed one a couple years ago and glad now that i did. am putting about 400 hrs a year on the 86 and that would be a LOT of gasoline!

Allan

I had a 706 ger.deisel. Bought used and put about 4000 hrs on it. It had 7400 hrs when I sold it and might have made it to 10000.Not an oil burner yet but may have needed valve work.

I did have to have the TA and clutch repaired because a fellow I hired to cultivate corn for me abused the TA. But I could pull a 4-16 semi mnt plow in 4 and low and also could make 4.5mph with 14ft Hesston swather in heavy hay. It was a good tractor for me. Good luck

steve
