Super A Generator Help Needed

I have a 1952 Super A with a 6 volt system. Ever since I bought the tractor 2 years ago I have had to charge the battery fairly often to use the starter. After tiring of this, I bought a new battery, cables, etc. and things were better for a while. Then I had to start re-charging again. I gave up and bought a hand crank, which worked well for a while. Then I started having to charge the battery to even get it started by hand. Now, I can start the tractor with the hand crank only with the charger hooked to the battery (it won't even turn over with the starter), but as soon as I take the charger off the tractor dies. I assume the problem is either the battery, the generator, the regulator, or a combination since the tractor starts easily with the hand crank as long as the charger is hooked up. The ampmeter doesn't work so I'm unable to get any clues from there. I need advice.

I think what you need to do is rather expensive will work and pay off in the long run you need to convert it to a 12 volt system with a alternator.

Very simply your tractor's charging system is not charging the battery as it is supposed to Here's what I'd do:

First replace the ammeter. A working ammeter will tell you tell you how the charging system is working. And if the battery is not being charged it will help you figure out why.

Next give the battery a full charge (24 hours on a charger). Then check to see if the battery is holds a charge (will crank the engine after sitting a few hours). There's a good chance your battery has been ruined from going dead flat and then sitting in that condition. If the battery is questionable, replace it!

Once you've got a working ammeter and a fully charged battery, use the troubleshooting flow chart (punch below) to determine the cause of your "no charge" problem.

Good luck!

The first thing would be to disconnect all of the wires between the generator, battery, and starter to make sure you have good connections. Make sure the ground wire from the battery has a good connection. You have already replaced the battery once so I would semi-eliminate it. Take the generator into a shop and have it tested. Some will do it for free or for next to nothing. The regulator could be bad. If the battery has gone completely dead then you may have to polarize the system. There have been other posts on this board explaining how to do this.
