My father in-law just bought a farmall M. Somewhere around the center of the tractor it makes a loud clicking noise when moving forward or in reverse and even sitting still running the loader up. It does not seem to make any noise in road gear though. Any ideas?

Harlen,

Indulge my old memory for a moment.

When I was a kid, we used to cultivate beats, beans & corn with these old gals. One arm of the cultivator wrapped under the center of the tractor.

Anyway to my point. If we should happen to hit a bump just right while moving to and from the field, that culivator shank in the center would rise up and bend that metal inspection cover right behind the belly pump upwards.

The big cotter pins inside would then "rub" on the inside of the inspection plate making a "ticking" sound.

Just an old memory; see if that inspection cover is not bent up.

Does the noise stop if the tractor is run at full throttle? It's been a long time, but if I remember correctly, the coupling that runs the liftall has 2 sliding collars with cotter keys or bolts that hold the collars in place. The cotter keys may be sliding up and down.

the coupler your talking about is one that is in an h farmall. the m has got one that looks like a cross that has been formed onto a donut.

Take a look at the drive shaft connector in front of the transmission. There is a yolk connection with rubber cushion washers that could be in need of replacement.
Lots easier than transmission work so look at the easy items first.
You will have to remove the belly pump to get at the drive shaft connection.

The constant mesh gears at the front of the tranny are under load in R 1 2 3 4 and when the lift all or rear PTO is used. No load in fifth, which is direct, because the countershaft is not receiving or sending power. No load on countershaft when power is going to belt pulley. I would guess that your click is a partially broken tooth. It might be a bearing. YOu need to fix it before the cost of repair escalates.
