I have a Cub either a 51 or a 52 and I've tried everything I can think of but it still refuses to run unless it's on full choke. Would the valves have any thing to do with it? They are set according to the specs.

Hope to hear somthing soon

JP

what type of hydraulic fluid would you use on a 1951 cub?

You might be pulling in excess air through a leaky carb flange / manifold gasket or perhaps a leaky manifold gasket. You can check by using an unlit propane torch. Just open the valve on the torch and move it around the mating surfaces. If it smoothes out and will run with the choke in, you've found your leak. Be very careful doing this.

Jerry:

George gave you real good advice. The only thing that I can add is that a little bit of reading will make things a little clearer than mud. :-)

Go to the Cub Manual server at the link below. Click on The Best of H.L. Chauvin and Intro to Won't Start, Caburetor Leak, Carburetor and Fuel Problems as a start. Then check out the Blue Ribbon Service Manuals. GSS-1411 is a good start. Check out the other ones as well.

Hopefully this week, a really new article will be posted specifically on carb problems.

Hope this helps

Check for good, sustained fuel flow by removing the 1/8" pipe plug on the bottom of the carburetor bowl. If the flow remains strong after a cupful or so flows, check the main jet. It's the hex head on the bottom of the left side. The small metering hole in the tip may be partially or completely plugged.

Thanks for the help. I've checked the flow of gas and it's a steady flow. As for the filter there is no debris there. And after cleaning the jets it's still not running with out full choke. I've even checked the floats and they move freely.

YOU MENTIONED THE CUB WILL RUN ON FULL CHOKE
THIS LEADS ME TO BELIEVE YOUR PROBLEM IS FUEL RELATED EITHER AT THE FUEL TANK OR AT CARB THE FIRST THING I WOULD DO IS PULL THE FUEL LINE OFF AT THE CARB CHECK TO SEE HOW MUCH FUEL IS FLOWING IT SHOULD HAVE AGOOD STREAM COMING OUT IF THATS GOOD THE NEXT THING I WOULD CHECK IS THE CARB FILTER SCREEN WHERE THE FUEL LINE CONNECTS TO THE CARB IF THATS CLEAN I WOULD SAY YOU CAN LOOK AT THE CARB AS YOUR PROBLEM GOOD LUCK LITTLE RED
