What are my options for getting more power from my H, what is involved and what is the cost? Thanks.

There are a whole mess of things that range in price from a little to alot, depending on what you want to do with your tractor and how much benefit you intend to gain versus cash spent. Start with carb rebuilds, governor cleanings, etc. Electronic ignitions (like the Pertronix model) are nice and easy to install. Run a straight pipe instead of the restrictive muffler. If you don't care about originality, take an angle grinder and remove the casting metal between the intake and exhaust runners of your manifold, making what amounts to an LP manifold. Slightly more expensive...have your head milled .100" or so. Clean up your intake and exhaust ports (not a porting, just a cleaning of casting lumps and bumps). Replace your pistons with firecrater types (about $300 give or take). The list goes on and on, and prices go up and up! Zak

Do you mean the intake and exhaust manifolds are one piece? If I remove the excess metal, is the idea to isolate the manifolds as much as possible to prevent air/fuel mix from being preheated? This should produce a denser mixture, right? Thanks.

I just completed mine I had 250.00 in head work, milled the head down, new intake and exhaust valves, new springs and keepers, new valve seats installed on intakes, ( for unleaded fuel purposes) 45.00 in gaskets, 300.00 for the pistons liners and rings kit, and I already had the 300 head. I suppose you could pick up a 300 head for about 100.00. Tearing the engine that far apart and not replacing the liners is a mistake in my opinion, considering that they are probably egg shaped or out of round, and probably original. This type of condition also results in premature wear of your new pistons and rings. I would also replace the rod bearings, they run about 60.00.
grand total : Around 750.00.
I am sure that some one will correct me if I am wrong , but pulling your head and grinding bumps out of the casting will make no noticable difference and would be extremly time consuming for the results that you will get.

Good luck Jon Mirgon

Get a head from a 300 farmall and replace existing liners and pistons , use step head pistons , this will take your compression ratio way up ! I just started mine for the first time tonight. I did the above mentioned setup, I have not gotten it out yet as the timing needs fine tuned, and head will need re tourqued, so I cant speak of the power increase just yet.

This sounds like a good idea! Are the combustion chambers smaller on the 300? Can I ask what a setup like this would probably cost me? Also, why the new liners? Can't new pistons be used with old liners? Thanks.
