I just purchased a rebuilt head for my SM. Nice job of welding crack, new valves, guides, seats. Refaced and ready to install, $250 exchange.

Typically shops charge by the number of cylinders/journals and not by the engine displacement. I just did a complete rebuild on a C123 (Super C). I found the best price on the rebuild kit for the bottom end from tractorkits.com. I paid $125 for a crank grind, the rebuild kit included rod and main bearings, I measured the crank myself and ordered the oversize bearings with the kit. This is usually cheaper than having the machine shop get the bearings. The head was $30 for cleaning and pressure test, $50 for valve grind and another $28 for new guides. The head was flat as a pancake so no mill job was needed. I had them fit the wrist pins to the rods, another $40. Make sure the bearing ends of the rods are still round, if not have them reworked, probably another $60 or so. To save a little I cleaned the block myself. I also had to replace the timing gears for another $180 and had the rockers refaced. Bottom line, if you do it right it add's up.

Head-no valves grind old valves and seat 90
Sleeves,wristpins,ring 190
insatll sleeves and wristpins 40
Clean block-20
Turn crank 95
bearings rods and mains .010 on rods .020 on mains (numbers hard to make out, reciept got wet)looks like 95 or 195
Full ghasket set was around 80,didnt keep that reciept.

This was about 3 years ago and the guy who done all my machine work cut me a break on the cleaning price.

Well, your heading mentioned having the head redone. I had the head on my A rebuilt by a local shop. It cost $200 for cleaning, milling, and new valves. A new sleeve and piston kit cost $300 and a gasket kit cost $50. I measured my crankshaft journals with plastigage and found that they were right at being too worn so I had the shop grind the crankshaft and get me new bearings, that was $200. An H might be more. This might seem like a lot of money for fixing up a tractor but when it is finished I will have a brand new 1946 Farmall and they don't make 'em anymore.
