M Lambert brake tear down results

Tore both sides down today. The one side that I had originally taken apart was in good shape overall, but the side I hadn't opened up yet was in bad shape. The actuator plates were rusted and the pads were wore down into the rivets on one pad. These pads are 6" 26 spline. There was no oil at all in either side. I took several pics that I'll upload as soon as I figure out how to do so. The side that was bad (right) also was odd. There was a machined groove about 1/4" from the outer edge of the splined hub and one pad/disc had no splines. Also, where the inner pad goes on the hub, the splines were wore down pretty badly. Are these hubs available? If so, how much do they run and do you simply remove the bolt on the inside of the hub to replace it? Again... the pics will help once I get them uploaded. Thanks guys. Also, both the cone shaped return springs were broken in a couple places so I'm not sure if its worth putting them back in or not. Couldn't you just make a similar sized spring work anyway? Are these available from IH/Case? Thanks a ton for any info. I'm also gonna upload all the info and pictures I get on these brakes to my website for anyone that ever has problems with them to refer to.

I should have looked at my parts info before posting below. There is a hub that goes over the pinion shaft that has the splines for the disks. Don't know if that is available as a new part or not. However, if you got it from IH, I'm sure it would be very expensive. I'd try salvage dealers like Steel Wheel Ranch, or JP tractor salvage. Also, I forgot to mention that my IH dealer told me he could not get the cone shaped return springs. I ran my brakes for some time without the spring on one side. The brakes worked without it and I really could not tell much difference after I put in the used spring I found. If you need any part numbers, post back, and I will look them up for you.

The hub looks like it can be easily replaced by just removing the center bolt that holds it in place. I did find one used one today, but the price was rediculous. Oddly enough, this side with all the problems had more stopping power than the clean side for whatever reason. I guess the pads got a better grip on the rusted plates. I would appreciate any part numbers you can give me for these brakes, especially the splined hub.

I got the cone shaped return spring I needed from JP Tractor Salvage in Fredrichstown, MO. From you description, it sounds like the splines on the one disk were stripped out and thus all the load on the brakes was on only one disk. If the splines on the shaft are worn, replacing that is a big job. I think the shaft is the same for the Lambert brakes, or for the band brakes. The Lamberts were and add on, and they just go on the same shaft. For the band brakes, the drums just go on the shaft instead of the splined disks. If the splines on the shaft are worn, the brakes won't work very well, as the disks must slide freely on the shaft to work correctly. The shaft is the end of the pinion gear shaft and to replace it, you must go into the transmission. The pinion gear and the shaft are all one piece.
