Talked to a guy this weekend that has a '52 Super M. He says it has some kind of 2-speed attachment on trans. Shaft runs through trans., fork inside on shaft. Lever(missing when bought)on right side of tractor to engage it. He also said that it could be engaged by hand, but is geared too fast when it is. This is all the info he gave me & I'd like to know more. Can anyone give me more info on this!!!! All help appreciated.

I knew you guys would be able to answer this. Thanks a lot. Now, a few more questions! Where exactly was this gear set inside trans.? If I understand you correctly, this gave it 4 more speeds between 4th & 5th gear or was it more like a high/low range? Could this be shifted on the go like regular trans. gears? Where was shifter located & describe it? Any extra info appreciated! Thanks again for previous posts.

I have a nine speed transmission on my Farmall MD. The way mine works is that it has two gears on the input shaft of the transmission driving the lower gears. The shifter lever shifts these two gears back and forth between normal speed and high speed. You must shift with the clutch in as there is no sychronizer. The problem with it is that when you are in high range, the hydraulic pump (if you have a belly pump on the Super M) and the PTO shaft are turned at the higher speed. Mine is shifted with a lever on the left side of the tractor, but I think it could be installed on either side as they simply drilled a hole in the side of the transmission to install the linkage. TDK,
It's not like a TA, you must use the clutch to shift it. I don't suppose he wants to sell it does he. I have a SM tranny with the Lever type 9-speed in my M that I pull. I am always looking for more. The shifting fork is inside the tranny housing and the lever is on the right hand side of the housing. A long steel rod then runs up to the steering post for easy access to shift.

Appreciate all the help. I knew I could depend on you guys! I don't know if it's for sale, I believe he still uses it. Just met him this weekend and he was looking at my bros' 300U & asking about the T/A. Went on to tell me the story about his Super M. I'll let him know what you guys told me and see if it is for sale. Thanks again!

Dont spread manure with it engaged.

M & W Gear Company, Heisler, and probably other companies offered an after market gear set for H's and M's that added four more speeds between normal 4th and 5th. Reverse was similairly accelerated but 5th was not. PTO and belt pulley speed were faster as well, probably bad news. The gears were useful for harrowing, rotary hoe, road work and _____ ___.
