Who is the best vendor to buy a carb rebuild kit from? I see many types with many different options of parts. My carb is leaky (through the main jet adjustment screw) and looks gummed up and it causing my H to sputter and plugs to foul.

Pat,i have overhauled many up draft carbs in my day the most complete kit is from I H case dealer but the napa brand is what I prefer just as complete and costs less. One word of caution the last carb I overhauled was on my personal pulling tractor a SMTA the main jet packing was wrong did not catch it untill the carb was on the tractor and leaked like a sive.I contacted napa and the manager said he would look into it.Check it before you install it Paul.

just picked up a kit for about $18 at Napa for my 49 M. It included a new needle, seat, idle adjusting screw/spring, main jet packing, screws, and all the gaskets for it. Overall I'm very happy with it and extremely happy with the price for what I got. They had it in the next day (no shipping charge). The only downside was that the seat part number had apparently changed and the needle was a little too long and stuck because it had the newer rubber tip. I simply pulled the new seat and put the old one back in and it worked great. It's possibly the parts guy at napa picked the wrong kit is why I got the wrong seat. Its worth checking into.

Pat:

I would suggest that you read the article on Carb Rebuilds on the manual server at the link below.

I have just uploaded Carl's very extensive article on the IH 3/4" Updraft Carb and with it is a review of the kits that are available. I know that this article deals with Cub Carbs, however, it does relate to H Carbs as well.

My advice is to stick with the CaseIH Rebuild Kit.

At your IH dealer the kit is fairly complete except you need to order the main jet (high speed screw) packing separately

Rebuild kits are sold right here on YT, I have not had any experience with these. I think the different prices you are encountering has to do with how complete the kit is. The best bet would be to buy a complete rebuild kit, needle valve and seat, gaskets, shafts, load jet screw, packing, idle screw, etc. If you get into the carb. and find you don't need all of those parts, save them. It might be just what you need for the next project.
