Hi,

Can someone tell me the difference in width across the rear axle assembly between a H and M?

Is the M just wider in the rear end housing or are its axle housings longer too?

Thanks,

Allan

Allen: I can't directly answer your question. However, what I can tell you is Farmalls 300, 560 and 656 are all same length on standard axles, end of axle to end of axle is 84" give or take an inch. I cant remember the length from end of axle carrier to end of axle carrier but they are all within an inch. With the larger gear box, this tells me axle carriers are actually shorter on the large housing.

On all three of my tractors, (300, 560 and 656) wheel tread was on 72" center, with wheels dished out. On all three the wheel casting was about 3 to 4 inches from axle carrier.

I suspect you will find same is true with H and M on the axle carriers. The H will have shorter axles. I am assuming standard axles on this, but the axle length really doesn't change the axle carrier. They will be same regardless of axle length. I'm thinking every IH tractor that ever used that 6 spoke, later 8 spoke wheel as on H, M, 300, 560, 656 etc. will be very close on end to end of axle carriers.
