Just got the (H) warmed up for the first time after the in frame overhaul. With the engine hot and at operating temperture, Oil Hot too The "new" aftermarket IH oil pressure gauge is on the low side of the Red area. I put new rod bearings in but the mains were not touched, Rod bearings plastigauged well within spec. Do you guys think that it is acceptabal to run her like this, used 10W 40 oil by the way.My (a) does the same thing, when I overhauled it the crank was machined and all berings replaced, Is this just the nature of the beast ?

Jonathan...I ordered one of those "new" oil pressure guages from OEM for my '52 H. I had previously been running a numeric guage from my late model race car that I knew was accurate. My oil pressure was 65 lbs...excellent pressure. I put on the "new" guage from OEM and it was as yours is, in the "red zone". I called OEM on it and they very pleasantly sent another one, but this one only reads "half way" which I interpret as 35-40 psi...still not accurate but what the he!! ya gonna do? The neelde is even offset from center slightly. I do not have a very high opinion of these "repro" guages. My suggestion is to compare the new one with another known good guage

I will check it with another gauge, The new reproduction had a made in Indonesia sticker on it, hopefully it's junk.

I don't know where you live as far as cold temps but I have had farmall's thatif they set thru cold winters without being run condensate will build up in the bottom of the pump when it freezes it will force the plate under the pump gears open a little. and you will lose most of the oil pressure I would look there first, make sure you shim it to spec when reassembling

I rebuilt my H engine with machined crank and all new bearings and I get 70 psi all the time hot. Pegs the gauge when cold. At a really low idle on a hot day it goes down to maybe 65psi or so.

Oh, I run Mobil Delvac 5w-40 in it...

You have a bad relief valve, bad oil pump, or bad bearings. 75psi is the spec given for oil pressure in the shop manual...

I had a C with very low oil pressure, the gauge was aftermarket and read about 10 lbs. cold and dropped to about 7 hot. I ran it forever like that with no problem. Don't get me wrong, I'm not advising this. Did you check the oil pump? The tendency with the IH pumps is for the white metal end cover to warp to the point where there are large gaps for the oil to escape between the bolts that hold it to the pump body. I take it to the belt sander and smooth it off and then make sure the end clearance from the end of the spur gears is within spec. There are thin gaskets that are used as shims to vary this distance. On the C the oil pressure went up to about 15 psi hot after fixing the pump.

Bummer. By low side of the red area, do you mean zero oil pressure ? If so, I would check it with another gauge calibrated in psi to see if they agree. You might have a new bad gauge.

My H has the pointer about in the middle of the gauge at idle, hot. I am using 10W40 also.

If you run any engine with very low oil pressure, you could wind up with your own exploded view of the motor.
