I overhauled a 560 gasser for a neighbor several years ago. Now it has knock, sounds like a wrist pin to us. He says this tractor has done that before. Any comments?

Cowman: I saw a 560 once with 282 diesel, would develop a sharp knock and gradually fade away. Turned out to be rings breaking up and coming to top of piston. After they got beat up enough they blew out the exhaust. They claimed there was no rings left on no. 2 piston when they removed it. I saw the top of piston when they dismantled it, had some quite bad scars on it. He said you could hear and see the metal going out the exhaust.

One I had happen myself was a bent valve push rod on 656 with 282 diesel. I don't think that one will go away. The interesting part about that one is the noise is worse right out in front of radiator. Over the years I have heard that one couple of time on other tractors, and in each case it sounded the worst out front. I also heard it on a pickup and the only place you could hear the noise was standing in front of truck.

If you remove the plug wire on the knocking cyl. does the knock go away? If it does I'd say it is wrist pin or rod. Some of those gas 263 carboned up bad, thatcould cause a knock when a piece comes loose. If it is carbon what I do is remove the air cleaner hose from the carb. Get a windex or spray bottle. fill it with water. with the engine warmed up and running a little above idle spray in the water,in fact try to kill it but don't.this will disolve the carbon, don't laugh til you tried it

Retired,

I do the same thing; only I use a real light mist from the nozzle on the garden hose. Nothing cuts carbon like water (and antifreeze)

Hmmmm,

Well, as you already know, a wristpin knock has a sound like a rattlesnake; once you hear it, you never forget it.

Trouble is, this noise will not come and go; when it is there, it's there until it cracks the piston, damages the head, cylinder wall or is repaired.

If the noise is coming and going in a gasser, perhaps it is carbon buildup? Kinda has the same sound, but not as drastic.

My view,

Allan

I rebuilt a 351W for my old Ford 4x4 and it has the same thing. Sounds like a mix between a knock and a small pebble in a tin can going up and down with the piston. But only when the engine is "floating" in the RPM range - around 2500 rpm. Any slower or faster and the engine has a somewhat load on it and the sound goes away. Only makes the noise when it's "floating". Been like that for a long time. About 5 years now I guess. I wouldn't worry about it unless it's making the noise all the time. Then of course it's on the way to self-destruction. In my case, I just don't let the engine "float". Does that 560 knock all the time or just sometimes?

Had a ford 361 in a F600 and it would knock when you held a steady foot on the accelerator and would not knock when you gave it gas. After lots of checking I found a wrist pin keeper in the bottom of the oil pan. It had already ruined the engine. from the scraping aginst the cylendar.
