Kinda in a dilemma, I have a 59' JD 430w, good little tractor, not many options, but really stout for its size. I have the chance to trade straight up for a farmall 460 gas, wide front, all the bells and whistles, 3 pt, live power, etc., except for the deluxe seat. Farmall has 5700 hours showing on a working tach and seems to be in good shape, couple of oil leaks and the power steering catchs for a second every now and then. We had a 404 gas when I was a kid, my dad says the 430JD would eat it for breakfast. I know the 460 is a lot more tractor at about 48hp, than a 404. I don't row-crop much anymore, mainly cows and boer goats, pulling disc mower, rakes and similiar work {have a cab 5610 to bale with}. Question is do you think I'll be satisfied with the 460 or will I always regret trading off a really good 430 for a nightmare? Thanks for your opinions

I hate to say it but if you trade even you lost, get that 430 in front of enough green guys bidding and you might be able to buy a 460 with a loader. Because they are small they are popular with collecters.

I have a 460 but have no experience with the JD. In my opinion, the 460 is bigger, so it will easily outwork the 430 jd. However, i think the JD is more in demand, and is worth more. I am not a big 460 fan, my M will outwork it. I'd keep the 430, or if you really need a larger tractor, i would really keep looking for something other than a 460. JD 630?

Hi, when I was a teenager we had a JD 420U and IH 300U. The JD 420U was a great tractor, reliable, easy on gas but had only 4 speed transmission, no live PTO, not the easiest to steer and brakes that require superman to push. Your JD 430 probably has 5 speed and live PTO.

The 300U was more powerfull, easier to operate, 5 speed with TA and IPTO but had one problem, it liked to burn gas. Would burn 2 CDN gallons or more an hour on an IH #15 forage harvester.

Have no expierence with 460.

My 2 cents
JB

Hello. I have an original operators manual for the 460 tractor. Please let me know if it is of interest to you. Robert.

Kind of agree with rustyfarmall - both the 430 & the 460 are appreciating in value; probably better investments than some. You'll like the 460. Not a powerhouse, but smooth & comfortable, easy on gas, handles nicer than the 404 & much nicer than 430.

Why trade off the 430? Keep it and add the 460 to your tractor stable. Having a spare tractor around can be pretty handy at times.

I would buy the 460 out right if my wife would let me, but we're in the beginning stages of renovating my grandparents house and money is a little tight, so it's either trade or no go. I promised her I wouldn't buy another tractor until the house was done, I know that's screwed up priorites, but sometimes you have to do what makes the better half happy.

Your wife is right on that one, a nice collection of old tractors is not much fun if you don't have a decent roof over your head.
Also, as much as I hate to admit it, I think maybe the 430 JD might bring more money than a 460 Farmall, I would do some price checking before making any kind of trade, just to make sure you don't come out on the short end of the stick.

I don't know much about the 460 but have a 430 U. It was my uncle's tractor until his death. It has a #35 loader that he never took off. It is an excellent little tractor and would hate to be without it. I take the loader off in summer and use it for most of my stuff. I have a SMTA to run the baler and bigger stuff. The 430 takes hardly any fuel and dispite it's lack of attention in early years it just keeps going. You know what has been done to the 430 and what hasn't been done, it will take you a while with a different tractor.

The 460 is a good tractor as long as it is a gas. It is a lot more tractor than your 430. Why do you need a bigger tractor? What will you use it for. As for the headache part I think that is part of buying any old tractor that is 40+ years old. IF WE DIDN'T LIKE EM WE WOULDN'T BUY THEM. I hope that whatever you decision is that you are happy and enjoy that old Iron.

IH-FARMALL 460; 6 CYL, 236CID GAS, XMSN 5F-1R, 50 HP PTO, 5255 LBS, LO 2490, MID 3470, HI 4340.

JD430, 2 CYL, 113G, XMSN 5F-1R, 5F-1R, 30 HP PTO, 3210 LBS. LO 2080, MID 3170, HI 4030.

IF I HAD TO CARRY ONE OF THESE TRACTORS ON MY BACK I WOULD CHOOSE THE JD, BUT FOR EVERY OTHER REASON I WOULD TRADE THE JD FOR THE I-H 460.
I WOULDN'T LOOSE A WINK OF SLEEP OVER THIS DECISION. THEN GO FIX UP THE HOUSE FOR YOUR BETTER HALF.

I farmed with two 460's years ago. Several problems with them including weak TA's, poor hydraulics (leaks and noisy) and engine problems. All this adds up to high maintenance costs. I would be cautious of owning another one.
