Stripped threads in final drive housing

Howdy, all.

I've been trouble keeping equipment mounted on my Super A. The threads in the center hole on one final drive housing are just about gone, and if I work for any length of time the bolt will just wiggle its way out. I've put lock washers on it, but that doesn't seem to help any. As best I can tell it's only holding with a few threads. Has anyone dealt with this before and what would you recommend?? I'd look into helicoils but I'm just about certain they don't make them in the odd size IH used here (well, the size and TPI are pretty standard, but the geometry of the threads is a bit odd.)

Thanks in advance,
Darren

All,
Thanks for the responses. I can see how the threads on the bolts (studs actually) could have gotten worn down over time to look 'non-standard' if the previous owners left 'em loose. Since you guys say there's room to bore that thing out and put in inserts, I'll look into doing that. Before I remove any metal, though, I think I'll go get a 5/8-11 end tap and try to clean those threads up-- maybe I can replace the old hardware and be o.k. Surely can't hurt.

You guys are a veritable fount of knowledge-- Thanks again.

Darren

I think the size is 5/8-11. Nothing odd or unusual about that. Drill straight in, a hole at an angle will be additional problems. If the threads are worn, which they obviously are, the configuration will look odd.

Darren, I am unsure what a buddy of mine uses but they are far superior to a helicoil. I thought helicoil was the greatest until I just saw these the other day. What you have to do is drill out the hole to the specified size and retap the hole to fit this insert that is the same bolt size you had before. Put your old bolt in it with a jam nut to tighten in the insert. Once it is in place you take a drift punch and a hammer and drive in 4 small stakes that are made on the insert. My buddy showed me several different jobs he has used them and they all are doing well. The only drawback I can see is if you don't have enough room or the cost of them. He has boxes of all different sizes and said the one he was using was @$6.00 each for @7/16 inside and 1/2 outside. They are similar to these at WWW.ezlock.com Good Luck, Kent

Try to find a retailer of KeenSerts. They are similar but far superior to helicoils. There is nothing exotic about the thread size or pitch anywhere on your tractor. What you are calling the odd geometry of the threads is probably wear due to running with the bolts loose over time.

Use the heli-coil repair... I don't think there was anything odd with the geometry of the threads... just worn out.
