the bore in the block is the same size on a 264 or a 281 block. i doubt if there are are any super m's out there that have not had the thinner sleeves and larger pistons installed.

Don,I also am a smta nut the only year the smta was built was 1954 and the only engine installled was a 264.The engine that you have in yours is most likely out of a 450.Paul.

SORRY FOR THE ERROR IT IS A 1954 WHAT DOES IT DO TO THE VALUE OF THE TRACTOR WITHOUT THE ORIGINAL MOTOR

No sarcasm, but probably nothing.

no sarcasm intended but a bigger engine would be an improvment, we had two of them one diesel and one gas and we called them the gutless wonder we had a 52 M that was kitted and it would plow deeper and go faster than either one, the two gas tractors couldn't pass the gas tank before noon. My guess is the live hydraulics was sucking out the horsepower. I'm not sure what ci the diesel one was but I think it was the same as as the TD6 and it was good on fuel but power was lacking too. My two cents says the bigger engine would be a plus.

A bigger engine is always a plus, if you intend to use the tractor, thus the increased power as you go from M to SM/MTA, 400, 450, 560, etc (some people think the 560 has less power than the 450). I wasn't thinking HP, but more what a collector might want, for some collectors, the 281 would be a negative, because it wasn't original, others wouldn't care.
