Assuming you have a gas engine and no muffler. How much flame? Are we talking a little red hopping up out of the stack or three feet of orange shooting to the sky?
When I'm mowing with the Super M, particularly in the evening you can see a little red or sometimes blue hopping out of the stack a little bit.
If thats the case, its no big deal. If you've got big flames and such I'd look for problems.

I would suggest you pull the valve cover and check the clearances on the valves. Sounds like you have an exhaust valve or 2 not closing.

Was this a tractor that sat a while befor eyou purchased it? It's possible that a bird nest or soemthign got in the muffler or manifold and is burning. Odd, but it could be. Another question. Does it do this under load, or all the time? We have several gas tractors and all of them will shoot flame when pulling a big load. Our 656 hydro will make the pipe glow with a big enough flame to drive with in the dark. Got a Case 830 diesel that does the same thing. Might be normal.

I don't think it's normal, I agree with the theory that an exaust valve isn't closing. We have a 340 utility and have worked it at night and don't even remember the muffler glowing. You do have a mufler on it, right?

I agree with Red and Aaron, you have a stuck value, I have a 340D and have never seen my stack shot flames' nor turn red, even after plowing for 5 hours or more :-) The only other thing I can say is if you have " D " they may have a larger button in the injector pump, I suggest changing it back to normal. If it's gas they may have put bigger jets in the carb, but it shouldn't run well at lower speeds if they have done this. Again I suggest going back to the nomal jets and setting if this is true
