Al: The Torque Amplifier only adds a "half a gear" to the normal five. It is not a "range" lever per se--it does not give you 5 gears and then another 5 gears where 1st in the high range is higher than 5th in the low range. It was meant for decreasing the ground speed slightly when the pulling got tough, or for matching ground speed better to the conditions for tasks such as cultivating. In operation, you would typically leave the TA in "high" (pushed forward) until you needed a bit more torque, then you (quickly) pulled the lever to the rear, which would result in a slightly slower ground speed. The TA setup is notorious for going out of adjustment, and though it works well when it's properly maintained, many tractors have one "side" or the other (high or low--usually low) that doesn't work and the owner just uses the working side. There are many threads in the archives that discuss adjusting and fixing the TA if you care to read them.

The "high & low" or torque amplifier only has two positions. The low side, which is attained by pulling back on the lever, is frequently non functional. The shift pattern wiith the gear selector remains the same on reverse and the five forward gears.
