Got me going this morning. I went to the Post Office and the Flag was flying half-staff.(2nd time in a week) I went in and asked the clerk "what the h*ll is wrong with your Flag?" Seems some dip sh*t ex-posal guy died, No disrespect to the family but do we dip the UNITED STATES FLAG evey time some nobody dies? I came home and got mine out and ran it up the pole and it will fly there all summer.
There I just had to vent that to my friends.

Jerry and Alvin are correct.

By the way, "dipping" the flag (as in a parade salute) is never appropriate. There was a big controversy about that in the 1936 Olympic Games when the U.S. would not follow other countries in dipping their flags to the hosts' Nazi flag.

You're really talking about flying the flag at half mast, not dipping it. My understanding is that the president or a governor can issue a proclamation that flags be flown at half staff. I would suspect the U.S. congress can too, although I'm not sure on that one. But the notion of someone personally ordering the flag to half staff just because someone they respect has died is inappropriate, however touching.

No disrespect to anyone, but I agree we dip the flag for far too many. If we go by those rules we would never have the flag flying "high", as I am sure there is a veteran, or postal worker, etc, etc. who is a veteran passing on every day. My father was a disabled WWII veteran wounded seriously in action, but I do not feel the country should have lowered the flag on his passing. Mom and I did request the military service at his funeral, and proudly display the flag which was presented to mom who has since passed on. As someone stated the President, and/or possibly the Governor should be the only ones to determine when to lower our flag. We should not have to ask why a flag is flying at half staff. Respectfully.

I remember hearing something in the news about flags being flown at half staff yesterday for someone. It wasn't just your post office.

They dip it at my place of employment when an employee dies, drive's me absolutely nuts. Mw dad was a WWII and Korea vet and an active Legionaire. You learned proper flag etiquette in our house.

While I agree with you about the flag, I resent your reference to postal employees.

NC:

not to be a pain, but it is possible this ex-postie was also a Veteran. In that case, it is VERY appropriate that the flag be dipped for this nobody!

I have learned a lot about patriotism and respect for Veterans from my American brothers and sisters, and I for one fly my flag at half staff whenever someone I know who is a Vet has passed on. This is the least I can do to help us all remember those of us who have answered the final call!

Everything is not always as it appears.

The last time I read the rules for flying an American flag, I believe it said the President ( and possibly the governor) can authorize the flag to be at half staff (I can't find the rules, but they're probably on the net; the American Legion gave the rules sheet away here in town a while back). We had the local President of the County Board request half mast for a week after some local person died. Not correct according to the flag rules which are established by the feds!

A couple of years ago the local nursing home had theirs flying upside down. I promptly called and asked if we were under attack or in distress. Even after I told them, they had not a clue. Took them over an hour to change it.

Dipping and Flying at Half Mast are entirely different. Dipping is never permitted, half mast is specified by statute. Local's (Post Masters, funeral home directors nor bar onwers) are not granted autority over the emblem of the United States of America.
