I just bought an International Cub. (1977 ?) The guy said he had it running last summer. He had the distributor out for some reason and told me it needed to be retimed. I got #1 cylinder TDC, set the distributor to fire on #1 piston with the points open.Did I do this right? Got spark to the plugs but didn't start. I sprayed a little starter fluid in the air cleaner and it started but wouldn't keep running. No back firing, ran smooth for a second. Then thought the problem was the carb so I put a new one on it but still does the same thing. Could it be the adjustment on the carb? Or am I missing something? Distributor 180 degees off maybe? Any help will be appreciated.

You say it ran for a second -- did it fire on all cylinders or just fire once and die? If it only fired once, and died immediately you could have the plug wires out of order. If it does fire immediately your timing is not off. Otherwise you probably have a fuel flow problem like the others said.

As long as your spraying starter fluid it runs.

You have a fuel problem -- you say you have a new carb so adjust it according to the manual--I don't have a Cub so am not familiar with that carb. If you determined the flow by removing the gas line from the carb, remember that if it is like other IH carbs, there is a screen inside the fitting that the gas line screws into. Remove it and see if the screen is plugged. I don't think you are getting enough fuel, if you are then the main jet almost completely closed. The A,B,C, carbs do not have an adjustable main jet unless it was designed for kerosene/distillate.

You didn't mention gas flow to carb. Open the setscrew on bottom of carb and see if you have a continuous steady flow. You may have crap in your tank plugging up the outlet flow.
