I recently bought a Farmall 504 that someone put a C263 six cylinder engine in it. They did a good job of it and looks like it came from the factory that way. What I would like to know is can I identify what model of tractor this engine came from and what year by the serial number? The number is 39192. Can anyone out there help me?
Tom

Tom, after looking through my parts books, no, I don't think you'll be able to identify it by the serial number alone. The C-263 was found in many machines. The 403 combine, the 615 combine, 560, 660, 706(until November '66) and 656 tractors all could have it, and there are thousands of them out there.

Tom, look towards the rear of the left side of your engine block. You are looking for a casting code. It tells you the exact date the block was cast, and could help in figuring out what machine it came from. The code on the C-263 in my 706 is 12-8-K (the dashes are actually imprints left by the flat-headed screws that held the casting code tag to the mold when the block was cast), at least I think it's a K. This code is December 8th, of whatever year K stood for. Someone else will have to help you with the letter codes, I know IH started over with "A" in 1955, but I don't know what letters they skipped.
