I have a1066 that runs very well but I have trouble getting it started. I would like to see it turn over faster I already replaced the batteries but this didn't help. But even if it did turn over faster it would still probably start hard, I think it has good compression and really runs very well. What are some other things to consider, Thanks

Hugh gave you the good news. Here's the bad. Purchased a diesel that had an affinity for starting fluid. Spent $500 on rebuilt starter new battery, 00 cables as short as possible, shined all contacts..... pfffff fffff ffft.

When I had to give it a squirt on the 4th of July, I said enough is enough. Rebuilt the engine and now no fluid even in the winter.

Hope Hugh is right.

txblu is right. we had an 856 that we have had that never had the engine rebuilt till july of 2001 when the engine spun a bearing while going down the road. before we rebuilt the engine it needed ether just about every time u started it. it needed it every time u started it below 70 degrees. rebuilt the engine started up every day this winter with out ether.

txblu: We all hope I'm right, I took my cue from the fact he said good compression, and the tractor runs well after starting. The very best thing he could do right now is go where there is a good starting 1066, 1086, etc. Then he can compare how fast it is cranking compared to his. Tractor starters tend to get slow over a long period of time, thus you don't realize how bad they are until you rebuild or hear one the same. My dad was a firm believer in farm visits, he said you learned all you own short comings and mistakes.

I just went through this with my 966, bought new batteries, cables are good. What i ended up doing was pulling the starter off and put bushings and brushes in it and turned the commintator or a lathe, works great. Wish i would have rebuilt the start a couple years ago.

Tom: Cranking rpm is the answer, for the diesels. Either your batteries aren't heavy enough, battery cables bad shape or too light. Your starter could need rebuilding. My bet is its one of those three, judging from how well you say it works after starting.
