cub carb headaches

I've enjoyed old iron for some time and as of last week have added a '47 cub to the barn. As this is my first IH I've got lots to learn. The little girl came with a 5 ft. belly mower and I hope to run her quite a bit as a mower tractor, only problem is the darn carb. She floods out as soon as the settling bulb is turned on.

Got a kit locally and put it in, but no luck. Tried all sorts of float settings but the only way she won't pour gasoline out on the ground is if the float is stuck shut -- of course it doesn't run real well that way. On closer inspection, the speck of dirt I was trying to remove in the bore of the carb just below the casting for the discharge nozzle is actually a hole! Gasoline is flowing from the bowl through the main metering jet into the idle well and from there through this hole directly into the bore of the carb below the venturi. The gasoline in the carb bore eventually levels with the bowl and pours out all over.

Is it possible it's been a bad casting from day one? There's no visible damage to the exterior of the carb casting and no scratches or tool marks inside either.... OR .... is it supposed to be there and I've got other problems?

While I'm at it, any advice for a newbie at cubs? Her barn mates are a '40 9N, a '43 2N and a '52 Caterpillar D6-8U, I imagine the cub will fit right in.

Hi I'm TEC.

One of the tips I'll give out this month is related to the needle valve and seat on the Farmall Cub tractor with the IH made carb. The needle/seat assembly from IH (#251300R21 ) sometimes sticks causing the carb to flood out. The solution is to replace the needle valve with one from an IH Cub Cadet. I recommend you use Kohler Engines part # KH-25-757-01 carb kit to do this. The gaskets in the Kohler kit are useless here, you only need the needle valve. Priced at about $8 the Kohler kit is a bargain fix for a messy problem.
