What's a good paint job worth?

I would like anyones opinon on whether or not I paid to much for my paint job on my '53 Farmall Super M. I had my buddy recently paint my Farmall and he charged me $650. He did very minimal body work and only shot the primer and top coat of paint. I did everything else from sanding the sheetmetal and getting everything else ready to paint. I had my buddy paint it who is not a professional, but does paint a few tractors on the side. He did a fairy good job except for a few runs in the front nose. Was $650 too much? Any input would be great. Thanks!

Painted a couple myself and done what I thought was a super job. Meaning I spent alot of time on it. Wished I would of spent a little extra money and used the best of the best for the paint. But never the less I done the paint prep, disassembly, and assembly myself and was really time consuming. $650 would of been in the ball park for the amount of time I spent on mine. If your buddy simply only done the actual spraying of the paint, sounds like you got took.

I have an opinion that I'd like to sell you on this matter. I am willing to let it go for as little as say..... .oh..... I'll make you a deal, say 600 dollars.

While I usually agree with 49 Cubber, and having painted a couple of tractors myself, for $650 there should be no runs, if you did all the prep work. If I did the prep work, I would probably charge $1500-$2500 depending on the amount of prep work I did, but I don't paint for other people. I do know the amount of work involved to get a quality job. Don't think your buddy is an experienced painter, and you got took. I doubt if he spent all that much money on paint, a "good" paint job would be $300 in paint, bc/cc is out of sight (using gallon prices). A cheap one might cost $50-$100. The red would be gone, part of the primer will remain. Did he use epoxy primer? Surfacer over the epoxy on the tin? Did he use tractor store paint, Case-IH 2150, or PPG, DuPont, etc. Makes a HUGH difference in material costs. Did he remove the carb, air cleaner, and distributer, governor, lights etc, or just paint over it all? Were the rims and tires removed? All this and then some has a large effect on the price.

Shoot you aint got to agree with me!In fact I have come to appreciate your opinions and advice and welcome anyone to give an opposite opinion of mine.I may just learn something. However on this case,I think he got took by a friend, but Iguess the friend thought thats what his time was worth.I personally dont mind a run or two, like I said it gives it a little character and even if there had not been runs from time to time at the factory,it shows the abilty of say an old farmer 50 years ago to paint his own tractor. Many of us,MYSELF most definatly included just simply cant paint worth a flip,so if it came down to it,650 might not be that bad.

We paint IH tractors for others, and charge $500 labor plus materials. We take all the paint off, and do what body work we can do.

While I agree that 650 was too much, especially from a buddy who basically did much of nothing but paint it,unless he had the equipment and you didnt,BUT whats wrong with a run or two.You ca nbet that when that Super M was new, there were runs in it,leave them alone,it gives a little character, unles there just absolutely horrid stick out like a sore thumb embarrassed to be on it and get the looks from the pros at the show who think youre a nut.I left a couple on my Cub and I have a few people accualy notice them, one old guy even made the comment he thought it was original paint.(I think he may have been losing it a little)

Yeah, 650$ sounds like too much if you have runs in the paint. Did you buy the paint or did he? Did you remove and mask the wheels or did he? Did you reassemble everything or did he? If he did none of these things you definitely got took. It depends some on what kind of paint he used also. If he used a really good quality paint system (which I am doubting he did) you could easily have over $300 just in paint. I've painted quite a few tractors and it is hard work. As others pointed out the prep work is the hard part. Don't get me wrong the painting part is no picnic either. If you take your time and do a good job it can be very time consuming. Bottom line is it sounds like too much for the job he did. I would insist that he fix the runs. If he has any idea what he is doing it is not that difficult.

That's a buddy? How does an amateur justify that kind of money? How many hours did he spend on it?
Did he buy the paint and supplies (I sure hope so)
Runs, sags, dry spots, orange peel etc. are absolutely unacceptable for that kind of money. My opiniion.

The prep is ALL the work. Painting takes a couple hrs max. Thats why Shlibe can paint a car for $195. No prep.
But it also depends on who was buggin who. I know I would not be in any hurry to be painting any ones tractor. Might take $650 to get me to do it too. I wouldnt charge a friend, I.E. the drip thing. $650,s not worth getting in a fight with a buddy. I would do it for free and he would deal with any drips.
Sounds like I am all over the place with my opinions on this doesnt it? Thats what happens when buddys start charging buddys. Usually just turns into a mess.

650 and you get runs, you should have him fix. You should have just bought/rented the compressor and what not, done it yourself. The hard part is the sanding and what not :) -Greg
