Pulling Car Trailer With GMC 4000?

I read many posts about safety and proper pulling vehicles when moving tractors. I plan to park my 1/2 ton pickup and work on a different set up. I have two nice antique tractors that I take to various shows. I just purchased a GMC 4000 on a sealed bid auction.

Has anybody ever put a tractor in the bed of a truck and pulled a car trailer with another tractor on it? My car trailer is too handy to trade in for a goose neck trailer. If so, how did this work?

The old GMC is a 1962 with 7,000 original miles. It runs like a dream. With a little work, It can look factory new. I thought it would be neat to show the truck too. A 6,200 lb Farmall M + a trailer is an awful lot for the 1/2 ton pickup. Even with trailer brakes.

You can haul 2 tractors and trailer with GMC 4000 but you will be slow on hills. The engines from that period do not have near as much HP as todays pick up engines. 20 mph or less up hills was considered accepable performance in those days. Have pulled many hills with loaded truck from that time when I could have literaly gotten out and walked beside truck.

Be careful is the one word of caution I have to say. The truck is considerably safer than the pickup as far as towing the trailer but a tractor loaded on the truck bed has a lot higher center of gravity. I nearly turned a F700 over several years ago going around a curve with a 88 Oliver on the bed. One other thing if it has a hoist tie it down or you are tied on with only 2 places-both rear corners and this is responsible for several overturns and upsets.
Have a SAFE SUMMER

scott, Your GMC 4000 will be plenty of truck to haul as you mention. One tractor on the truck, and the other on a trailer would not be a problem. The only problem I see is unloading at the shows. Certainly unloading the tractor from the trailer poses no problem. But I have noticed that a lot of facilities where the shows located no longer have loading docks or ramps, which will make unloading from the truck bed an issue in some venues.

Scott: I haven't been following truck model numbers, however I am assuming the GMC 4000 is the same truck as the old 40 series Chevy. I had a 50 series Chevy and 20' heavy car hauler. Many times I have loaded two 6000 lb skid steer loaders on truck and Farmall 560D with 2000 loader and assorted other equipment on trailer. Those dual wheels plus the 20" tires make a big difference when hauling a load.

I had always hauled this trailer behind my 7200 gvw 3/4 ton Chevy with a 4 speed and electric brakes of course. The first few times I pulled the trailer with the 50 series I didn't have trailer brakes, but in my opinion it was still safer than the 3/4 ton.
