We tried them out today. The H was rebuilt in late fall with domed pistons, new bearings, reground cam (.240 lift), etc. Marty's 70 diesel was mostly as found. I was pulling 2 16s, he had 3 14s. Marty would pull away from me slowly in typical going, making about 500' in an acre. When we got onto hard heavy soil or clay the H would die out and need to be shifted back into 2nd. The JD would smoke like he was fueling it with coal.

So far so good. But I need just a little more to keep up. Will rejetting the carb help ? I had opened the main one turn, and that seemed better. How about recurving the distributor ? Any other ideas ? Reliability is a must. This tractor has to keep working all summer. As a last resort, I could buy him some new shares to 'thank him' for helping out.

If you want to out-plow the JD70, get a good M or better yet, SM. If you're determined to come closer than you are, you can always open up the governor a bit.... Governed speed was factory set at 1815 rpm. Lots of them have been running for years at 2000 or a bit more.

First question, What's the hurry? Your supposed to enjoy being out in the field, enjoy listening to the tractor and watching the ground turn, not race the wind to the end of the field. My Farmall M can pull my 3-16's autoreset in 4th gear in corn ground, but hell, I put it in 2nd, and listen to the tractor hum while the autoreset snaps away.. it's all about the simple life, and getting out of the fastlane.

What's the hurry ? Let's see, this week I have to finish up repotting 5000 eggplant, make a delivery, seed 4000 winter squash, reseed 1000 summer squash, mix up enough potting soil to do that, spread 7T/A compost on 6+ acres, plant the next succession of greens, hoe the last succession of greens, rebuild the two hoophouses that blew down in a storm on Sunday, and there are still a few acres left to plow. Why do you ask ?

I pull an Oliver 2-14 with my 43' H in 4th gear all day long in clay 6" deep. My H however has been slightly modified. All fuel block with .003 out of the sleeves. Aircraft pistons. Gas head decked .002. Gas Manifold and an oversized straight pipe. No idea of H.P. but will pull 12' JD RWA disk in 2nd gear with mounted duels.

Two very different tractors; a better comparison would be a Farmall H and a JD B or a Farmall Super M and a JD 70 diesel. You'll never get an H to do what a 70 diesel will do. Two very good tractors but the 70D is the head of the league in this category.

As several people have said, those are two very different tractors. You said you wanted reliablity. Unless you are plowing very shallow, or in very light soil 3rd is going to fry your valves. Pull in 2nd and forget about your friend. From a stop, set at full throttle and let out the clutch. Does the H reach full rpm in a few seconds and stay there? If not you are damaging your engine and need to shift down a gear, do this as soon as it lugs down, don't wait thinking it will soon be out of the hard spot.

That's an eye opener. Why is working it in 3rd hard on the valves ? The motor has a pretty modest compression ratio, only about 6.75:1. It turns slowly, 1650 or so. The motor is not running hot, the gauge barely gets up to the RUN portion. The oil pressure is good. The seats look like a normal width, guides look pretty typical.

I'll have to check the rpm with a tach next time I'm plowing. I would be surprised if they drop off 100 rpm, it sure sounds like it is holding steady. It does run a little slower than rated in 4th, but it dies out too quickly to be any faster than third. Besides, it seems like that is a little too fast to cover the trash well.

Reliability is important, but if the motor lasts another 10 years before it needs to be reworked, that seems like an acceptable service life. In today's dollars, it would come out to around $230 per year. I'll spend more than that on 5/9th bu. boxes. Not to mention that plowing in second just seems so slow.

The key is not to lug the tractor. Having spent probably 5000 hours on an H as a teenager before I left the farm (I drove many other tractors in later years, and still piddle with an H), I know what the engine is supposed to sound like. If it does not get to it's rated RPM of 1650 in a few seconds, it is overloaded. Idle RPM is 1815, so there will definitely be an RPM drop under load--but it should be able to maintain that RPM, except for a few times when it is pulled down and rapidly recovers. You really don't need a tach. If as you say, it does not overheat, and it does not appear to be lugging, then you are ok. But the engine has to recover quickly from a "hard spot" or you will have problems later on, I can't say how long it will last. I mentioned valves, because they seem to be the first thing to go. I have been able to pull very few tillage implements in fourth. Conversely if it will not pull in second, and you have any acreage at all to do, you need a bigger tractor. I usually pulled a plow in second, disks and finish implements in third.

The 70 JD replaced the G. Have plowed with M in field with G many long days and like it or not G just had more power. In my experience M even with updated engine fell in between A and G in power.

If the tractor is running well don't mess with it. What plow are you pulling? If it is a P&O what do you expect? It seems like it takes about twice the power to go from 2nd to third with them. An easier pulling plow, like and oliver, or an IHC with the Hi speed bottom would be an easier and probably cheaper way to get into third gear.

BTW, the H was rated for two plows and the 70 for four.

The recurve will help, but on a farm use tractor, keep an eye on the springs in the distributor, since the recurve kits I use from a chevrolet, they are a lighter spring, have not had any come apart yet in a few years, but I do check them frequently. Pulling a 2-16 in 3rd? pretty good ol H if you ask me. Your story sparked a memory for me,, Dad and I would plow 30 acres with hid JD 730 with a 4-14 plow, and I had a Super H with 2-16 plow. He would run circles around me, but I did not mind a bit. That ol Super H was a plowing! Now, the 730 is a puller, and the ol Super H is getting restored back from a puller to original. It is a stage 2 Super H, Live hyd, battery under the seat, and different bell housing. I have everything to put back on it, fenders, lights, well everything, gonna be fun giving my ol friend a new look again! ChadS

Breaking a spring would be bad. How much advance are you running ? Looking at some of the other posts, I'm curious, how long does your motor last between rebuilds ? What fails ?

The parts book shows a different set of springs as part of the Fire Crater Power Improvement Package. The local IH dealer was able to get them and they were one red and one yellow. The instructions said to set the maximum advance to 22 degrees, and fiddle with it to keep the initial advance at TDC.

Don`t even try, They are two different tractors, I have both and the JD is bigger, heavier and more power. The H is much more pleasant to drive however.

Like the other post says if you want to play with a 70 get an M. Would also make some sense if you each had same plows. Comparing 2-16 to 3-14 never will make sense.
