My brother just bought a 966 and what a tractor!! Just wanted to hear what you guys have to say on it.

Also how many shank chisel would you try pulling with this. He bought a 13 shank 3 point and will be pulling in loamy ground. If we have problems we can take the extentions off to help. any info from you guys are appreciated.

GS, The 966 is my favorite of the post letter series 2WD tractors. The farm I work on has 2 of them, and while they dont do the work they used to since everything is all no-till, it is a great machine for the 15 ft. no-till grain drill and handles a 6 row no-till planter as if they were butter knives. even with no cab on either, they are better tractors than the 1456 with cab. It just takes more clothes in colder weather, but worth it.

Seems like all you guys like the tractor so my brother should have a decent machine. The other question i have is what does the water filter actually do on this tractor. i was told it kept moisture down on the sleeves so they won't rust???

GS, The 966 had wet sleeves, and one of the problems was cavitation, (small pin holes in the sleeves) The filter was an add on feature that owners attached to minimize the problem. Be glad that your brother's had the filter added as it added many hours to the life of the engine before overhaul. Cavitation, in fact was one of the very few problems that the 966 had. It was otherwise one of the best tractors IH built.

We had a 966 for many years and up graded it with an M&W turbo charger (115hp.). It performed very well, handled a 21' 490 disk and 5 bottom vari-width plow very well. We also added a tenderfoot clutch which made the machine very easy to operate. It is an excellent tractor.

Great tractor, keep the torque adjusted and she'll do you justice---You'll have a long lasting work horse! My dad and I farmed 300+ acres when I was in high school until I got drafted in 1971, we did it all with a Super M and a 400. When I got back to the states, we purchased our 966---best move we ever made, and still a great work horse. Dad's retired and I still use her and I'm restoring the Super now!! Love that Super M also--53'Model

GS, Mo 74 966 is one gutsy ol Darlin! She will handle 13 shanks chisel, just a flying in Lo 4 and 3 in tougher ground, about 8 ins deep. That is in Central Texas clay soils and river bottom sand
You shouldn't need to pull the 2 outrigger shanks.
As others have said keep the TA adjusted and ya'll should be go to go!
Mine is carring 750 lbs of cast wt on each back corner, on 18.4x34s. Also a 2350 IH loader on the front.
She will handle a IH 500 tandem disk with 22 in disk very well also. Hope this helps!
Later,
John A.

I think the 966 is my favorite of the 'bigger' tractors. Naturally aspirated, quick throttle response, fairly easy of fuel and a heavy duty drive train that will last thousands of hours. Keep that TA properly adjusted and it will last a long, long time.
