repairing a 400 TA

I just bought this tractor and I would like to know, is there an online site or does anyone have a service bulletin/repair maunual for the TA on a farmall 400 or an exploded parts veiw? mine seems to slip in 5th gear going up a hill when you open the trottle up or if you dump the clutch real quick in the lower gears. you can hammer the brakes while moving in gear and it will not slip. I need to repair mine and would like a little knowlege on how it goes together. could it possiblly be the clutch only? or is the TA involved as well? Thanks Hal

I would recommend you buy a reman unit if you find you need a torque. IH sold a special tool set for rebuilding these.With out these it would be hard to do the job right. Hershel sells remans for about 600.00

I&T Manual shows it pretty good.
You can check out my web site for R&R of a TA on a 400. I have the original TA out of my 400 still. I may try rebuilding it this winter and post that on my site also.

Hal,

Mine was doing the exact same thing, slipping going up a hill in 5th under hard power.

Come to find out, the seal at the rear end was leaking fluid up thru the pto tube and was saturating the T/A clutch because some idiot had plugged up the weep hole to keep oil from running out.

At the end of the day, mine took both clutches and a TA overhaul to the tune of $2144.

Hope yours is just a slipping clutch,

Before doing anything major I would check the adjustment on the linkage. The clutch andTA linkage adjustments are quite complicated. I overhauled the TA on my SMTA but don't think I would have attempted it without the service manuel and parts manuel.
