Folks, What does everyone here torque the head bolts to on a 1940 "A"? All the books indicate 65#, but I've seen everything from 65# to 80#. Why the descrepency?, Also, is it better to apply the copper head gasket sealer, or is it better to use no sealer and achieve the seal from torque only?

My book says 65 lbs too. I've heard that this was revised upward later, but I don't have an IH reference to point you to.
Weber's Tractors site says 80 lbs, I don't know where he got that from, but he is usually accurate in the info he posts, so it may be right.
Maybe he will see this and jump in. He does post here sometimes.

Check it out here, follow the link for Tune-up info.

Red Dave, Weber is one of the sources I was referring to when I mentioned a descrepency, or conflict in opinions for the lack of a better description. I hope some of the others who have experience in torquing these bolts chime in here with their expert advice. I'm all eyes.

Well, the last A I did, (about a year ago) I had the same questions you are asking now. I compromised and set the torque wrench at about 72-73 lbs. It leaked coolant when it came into my shop, but it doesn't now.
I did use a spray-on sealant that the parts guy at the Case/IH dealer, who we got the head gasket from, reccomended.

Red Dave, Thanks for the additional feedback. It always helps when one qualifies a statement as you did. That gives me something more to go on than trying to decide who's advice to best consider. Thanks, much appreciated.

Paul: I installed a new head gasket in my Super A several years ago. Actually I had a guy in this type of business do it for me. I'm not sure what he used for torque. He did not use a sealer of any kind. His concern on sealers if you happen to get a bit too much, the affect on thermosyphon. He was also very adamit that I come back after 8-10 hours of use and he retorque and reset valves. He did these items and I've never looked back.

The figure of 85# does ring a bell, but I'm just not sure on it.
