What grade of oil should I be using in my 154 final drives and Farmall H transmission. I have been using Kendal 5 star GL-5 80-140 multi-wt. and was wondering if maybe I should switch to IH. 90 wt? Thanks!!!

I usually vote for the oil that is newer and better. In this case, I won't do that. First of all, I'll assume no hydraulics are involved. Next, GL-5 gear oil didn't exist when your tractor was designed. A common belief is that GL-5 is an acceptible or even better substitute for GL-4, or even GL-2. This is not the case. They are specified to meet different applications. The transmission of my Nissan is specified to use only GL-4. I made the mistake of using GL-5 in it, and guess what? Major gear grinding. The syncros just didn't appreciate the GL-5 composition. GL-5 was not designed as a replacement for GL-4.

My advise: Unless you know more about the oil you are using, I'd stick with the gear oil that your service manual recommends.
