Put my tranny back toghether for the third time over the weekend.I hope I have it right this time,that top is getting heavy!ANywho,spent today going over it good and checking this that and the other on it and ran it for a good 9 hrs,then i realized,I NEVER CHANGED THE OIL.I know the tractor sat for about 5 years before I got it back in January,and I was afraid I had messed up something but fortunately I didnt.I changed the oil and immediatly my oil pressure was up to 80 at full throttle and 55-60 at idle,granted those numbers couyld be off some,cheapo depot gauge that was on it when I got it,plan on changing it soon.Some of the things I noticed,and want you alls thoguhts:Under load,I get some black smoke,no smoke at idle ot full throttle under no load,second there appears to be a good deal of smoke coming from the vent tube on the lifter cover,but that could be from the oil needing changed,I didny run it much other than to check for leaks when I finished changing the oil so I dont knowe if it was still doing it or not.Third,refresh my memory but isnt there a seal on the upper bolster at the back side where the steering shaft comes through.Ive got a leak there,but no biggie.Finally,this is tough to explain,my steering wheel shakes,not just the wheel,the whole thing,light bar,throttlel ever and all.I noticed that the shaft from the ujoint up isnt doing it,just the entire section from the joint back,and this is in third gear,just third,not any other.Thanks alot fellers!

Theman is correct about the vent tube as he described it, but are you talking about the "draft tube", that attaches to the plate that covers the push rods (on the block)? I think some smoke from there, or even a little oil, is normal, but I don't know how much is too much. All H's and M's vibrate some, but I have not had the particular problem you have, perhaps the U-joint is bad and for some reason the vibration is transmitted only to the rear. The bearing on the steering post that the steering shaft goes thru could be worn also, as could the shaft itself. I don't suppose the three bolts that hold the post on the transmission cover are loose? But, you've had all that loose to get the transmission cover off.

For the black smoke under load, try turning the load adjustment needle in in quarter-turn increments. This is the adjustment screw on the bottom of the carb at an angle. If that doesn't clear it up before giving problems throttling up, temporarily disconnect the air inlet tube from the air cleaner to see if there is some restriction at high air flow. One other option though not likely is a float level being too high.

The vent tube on the lifter cover is an air inlet. There never should be anything come out of it. Check to see if you have a tube connecting the back of the head to the air cleaner. They are often missing. This was a crude form of positive crankcase ventilation. The air path is: Air into the lifter cover tube passes across the crankcase to the governor housing (and to a small degree up the push rod paths). The tube angling out from the top of the governor housing goes into the front of the head. It then travels through drilled passages in the head casting to the top of the head under the valve cover. Over the rocker arm assembly, the tube continues to the back of the head. This tube has a hole drilled in it to gather vapors/oil mist in the top of the engine. From the back of the head (and through the steering/gage support bracket) there should be the tube mentioned at the beginnning of this paragraph. It is possible that a tube or passage is blocked. My '51 H will idle just fine through this system if I remove the precleaner over the hood and block the air flow with my hand.

Yes, there is a seal where the steering shaft goes into the upper bolster. If the tractor has been run under dusty conditions or if the shaft was removed while covered with rust and dirt, that seal can be damaged.

I suspect the steering wheel shake is a function of ground speed based on the tire lugs. Will it do the same thing on pavement vs. soft ground? My H shakes this way in 4th gear through a certain rpm.
