I have an H and I am Redoing the steering but i cant get the steering sector out. It says to use a puller in the servive manual but even the smallest puller i have wont fit between the steering gear housing and the sector. I jacked up the front of the tractor and put the old castle nut back on the top of the shaft and used a hammer to try to tap the shaft down but that didnt work so what can i do to get that gear off?

could you get to it with a torch, and just heat it a bit -- the gear should expand a bit off the taper, making it easier to pull off.

Garrison -

That sector gear is on a tapered spline on the pivot shaft � sometimes they can be a real SOB to get loose. Like the other Bob suggests you�ll probably need to beat on the shaft to break it loose from the gear.

I�ve found it helps to remove the lower bolster + front wheels by unbolting at the pivot shaft flange. Otherwise much of the force of each hammer hit is absorbed by the mass of the lower bolster and wheels. Also to protect the threads lay a chunk of soft metal (scrap copper or aluminum bar) on top of the pivot shaft, or use a HEAVY brass drift (the shorter and fatter the better�.) between the hammer and the top of the shaft.

The couple I�ve done required several heavy blows with an 8# hammer before they broke free.

Garrison that is a tapper spline on there so get a big hammer or steel block to lay on the nut with the nut just at the top of the threads so you do not bur the threads and then get a sledge hammer and give it a big hit it will come lose. At least you know the splines are ok.

I had the same thing happen to me. To remove the vertical shaft from the tractor I had to use a large punch and a large hammer and dive it down through that gear. I found out that the shaft had a bow in it that caused it to jam in the bushings. It must have been a common problem for and H as the salvage yard I go to has many of those shafts in the M tractors but almost none left in the H's.
