My 1942 Farmall H has the 1 1/8" dia. PTO shaft, and to my misfortune, after taking off the overrunning coupler, the shaft is in real bad shape, the splines are only half as wide as they should be, I've picked up a new(er) shaft from another H that is 1 3/8" in dia., but the bolt pattern is differant on the housings. They are both the flat style housing, not the style that sticks out 4-6". I was wondering if I can just switch shafts and put the new one into the presant housing, or do I need to mark and drill and tap new holes into the new housing. Also, I would think either shaft would fit into the gears at the front of the rearend/ back of the trans. If you can help, please reply as this is my only tractor right now and i need it to cut rake and bale hay, Thanks for your time and info.

You can switch shafts if it also is from an early H. Where the shaft connects in the tranny is different on the early models compared to the later models. I'd say, find an adapter, or another overrunning coupler, and weld it on your old one

Suprised to see an answer so fast, just getting ready to turn off the comp. I had another idea of cutting th old shaft half way and welding on the new end, but i suppose it wouldn't fit through the hole in the housing w/o taking the seals and bearing out. Not sure I'd wanna trust the weld inside the tractor turning at 540 rpm w/ a load. any thoughts?

I had a Farmall A that someone had welded a 1 3/8 stub to the 1 1/8. It worked fine, but when I went to restore it, I cut it off, which you can do too to replace seals.
