Main Bearings--Necessary to Split Tractor??

After some advice by several people on this board I am considering replacing the main bearings on my IH504. I just put it back together after replacing the clutch and wonder if its possible to replace the main bearings without splitting the tractor again? If not, I'll probably wait awhile to do it.

Also do you check clearance on the existing bearings by loosening the jounals and tightening them back down using a plasticguage?

put a hyd.jack under the balancer and an indicator on the frame and apply pressure to the balancer to see how much play is in the crank , mine had .010 it needed bearings and a crank grind

When the tractor first starts the oil pressure is about 55psi, but once the engine warms up it drops to about 20psi. I read in the service manual that the normal oil pressure should be about 45. Others here have suggested that the cause may be that the main bearings are worn.

Unless they have already been done, you'd probably get more bang for your buck doing rod bearings and milling the oil pump cover flat.

I might agree with Stan but I have never been one to piece meal a re-build. I'd probably run it til it had maybe 10 psi hot then re-build it properly by pulling the engine from the tractor and going thru it. Or sell it now while it still has some life left. All the bearings in an engine wear. The rod bearings maybe more than the mains.
The journals can wear out-of-round. Out of round journals will mean short life for your new bearings. If you do go in there and you find the rod journals are on size and round then you can likely slip all new bearings in there, mains included.
