I have inherited a 1966 IH 424 gas tractor with only 75 hrs on it and a frontend loader and IH 6' bushhog. I am working on restoring it. It has been kept in a barn and has not been working for the last 5 years but I got it started and overall is in good shape. The external brakes don't work. Does anyone know much about these little tractors? Also, does anyone know any info on if a rollbar would be available? I would like some history on these since I don't know much about them.
Thanks.

Nice tractor and only 75 hrs--boy is that a keeper. Does it have power steering? This is what I did to my 64 424 brakes. Remove and clean all parts good and sand the surfaces to a dull finish ( hand sand). Sand the brake disk to remove and rust/glaze build up. Disassemble the 2 counter-rotating steel disk and clean the ball valleys real good along with the balls. Ask the guy a NApa for shoe grease that goes where there is not suppost to be any grease. coat the ball valleys and balls lightly. Reassemble everything and adjust. Since my 424 gets little use I ride the brakes lightly during each use and it will slide the tires easily with quite a bit of pedal pressure. Like others have said they ain't the best in the world. One word of caution: Without the loader the the 424 will lift the front end in a heart beat so be mindful of that.Enjoy your tractor.

Thanks guys for the info. It does have power steering. Buck do you mean that the front end loader will give it extra weight to keep it down. Would you keep it on? It has weights on all wheels and a grill guard on the frontend. The wheels can be spun out wider, although I don't think they have ever been spun. I'm gonna start on the brakes this weekend.
Thanks.

No was not suggesting that you keep your loader on just for the front weight. Just pointing out that they get light on the front easy. Like On mine with a 6' bushhog and top link attached it is light enough to interfer with steering when carrying the weight of the bushog. I always travel with the tailwheel on the ground. I keep about 100 lbs on the front of mine and if it had power steering I would add more. I have no front wheel weights but the backs are loaded 16.9 x 24 turf tires. The front end lift is true with all tractors but I think this particular tractor requires that you are always thinking of the possibilities.

Good point Buck,
I am new to all of this and need to be as careful as possible since I just got the tractor and have my first piece of land.
Thanks.

I believe the 424 has the same brakes as the 444 which has 2 dry disks on each side. You will need to disconnect the linkages into the brake assemblies and remove the drums to access the works. I have the parts to do the brakes on my 444 and will be starting on it soon. I recommend getting a service manual for your tractor. These brakes are not fantastic even when working properly. You might want to try adjusting the little turnbuckle looking things in the brake linkage to see if that helps, but I suspect that rust, etc is your problem.

If they are like the ones on the Super series, you'll probably have to work on them every spring to get them to work right during the mowing season. IMHO, IH disk brakes were NOT one of IH's better ideas-the old band type worked MUCH better & gave way less trouble. (My $0.02 worth. jal-SD)

Yes you are right if you let the tractor sit all winter the brakes will not be good in the spring. I make sure to drive my 444 around some several times in the winter while lightly pressing the brakes, seems to help. I think the drum surface gets rusty and you have to wear it off a bit.
