i have a 49 H with a not-so-good transmission. the tractor would pop out of 5th on occasion but i let it go for a bit as i do not work the tractor and it seems to do it only on bumpy ground. tonight i got it out for a ride and went to take off and the tractor became stuck into 2nd gear. i could not get it out for quite a while. the shifter didnt seem to want to find the gear. it finally got out and it went into 3rd and clunked really bad. i got it into neutral and went back home in 4th. i played around with it and got it working ok but there was a bad clunking only in 3rd. i took off the cover of the transmission and found that the middle gear of the bottom shaft has a bunch of teeth missing now. i also found a bit of wear in the shifter and slides. here are the questions....should i replace all of the shifting bars as well as the shifter itself? will that fix the 5th popping out of gear? Could the transmission cover be worn and need repalced? The gear at the bottom.....does the tractor have to be split to replace this? can i leave it but not use that gear? is 3rd the one people like to plow with on these h's? it is parade, show, plow-day type tractor. is the tractor junk now? as you can see i am really in need of help. thanks!!!!!

You DO NOT have to split a H or M to work on clutch or transmission. Remove coupling to hyd. unit, remove hyd unit, this takes 2 people and a piece of rod or pipe. Remove coupling between clutch shaft and input shaft to tran. Take out input assembly, remove top shaft, be sure to keep shims to reinstall or your ringgear--pinnion clearance will be off. remove lower shaft. replace all brgs, seals, and any gear that has rounded or broken teeth. 5th gear is the weak part of H tran. You will need both 3rd gears, 4-5 slider and input shaft, at least. Remove chips/shavings from bottom of case.

Jason, I am fixing up the transmission on my H right now. It had several bearings out and other problems. I need to replace my shifter slides as the detents are almost gone, so it doesn't like to stay in gear. With respect to the transmission cover, look to see if the holes that the balls sit in are round or oval. On my Farmall MD the holes were so worn that it would not stay in 5th gear no matter if I had new balls, springs and good shifter slides, so I had to replace the cover (found a good one at the salvage yard). With respect to the bottom gear, you don't have to split the tractor to get it out. Probably want to remove the hydraulic unit to get better access. I cannot imagine an H without third gear as that is one of the most important gears for many things. I had a lot of chips in the bottom of my H transmission from all the gear grinding over the years. I used a magnet to get out what I couldn't clean out with diesel fuel flush. Good luck on your repair. Roger

The tractor isn't junk, but your looking at something that won't be cheap to fix.You will have to check the shafts for wear when you get it apart and make sure you check all the gears and replace any with cracked or broken teeth. You will have to split the tractor to do the repairs. You may be just as well off to look for another trans or tractor for parts and just fix it that way.

The H can have the trans work done without splitting the tractor. The clutch and all associated parts in the clutch housing will need to be removed, and the trans input carrier removed, and then the shafts can be accessed/removed from the tractor. time consuming, but easy to do. Like stated earlier, check for worn gears, worn shafts, and also check the detent balls & springs that hold the shift forks (under shift forks).
