Found a 300U problem, big to me

I thought I checked it out good enough to know that what needed fixed before haying was simple. Not. I've got hyd. fluid dripping out of the tunnel below the shifter. Dripping pretty good too. Gotta split it, huh? Probably the pump? Wish that manual was already here! Loren

Loren I had about the same problem. Mine turned out to be the large seal between the transmission and the read end. I had to split the thing to get to it. If you have to do that...remember there is a hidden bolt on the inside of that transmission case. You have to drop the plate to get to it.

There's 3 plates on bottom of clutch/TA housing. The front plate is for clutch access. If it's leaking here, you probably have a seal leaking around input shaft. If it's leaking from one of the other two plates it's probably the plate gaskets as there's oil in housing at these two points. This is only true if you have T/A and/or IPTO on your tractor and if I remember correctly yours does.

Sounds like maybe I was starting to confuse you folks so I went and looked at it again. Like you said TDK, there's 3 plates. A wide one at the front, a small one in the middle and a T shaped one right behind it. The case is formed in the T shape there also. Up off the bottom of the case there is a hole (7/16?) on each side of the T cover. That's where the fluid is coming out. In about 5 minutes of running on one spot it dropped about 3-5 table spoons of it. Am I clear as mud now? LOL Loren

The holes you refer to are weep holes for TA
clutch compartment. If your tractor is equipped with TA this clutch compartment is suppose to stay dry. It contains the TA clutch plate, pressure plate and release bearing. There is three seals that can leak into this compartment, toward the front of tractor there is a seal for the IPTO drive gear shaft, to the rear there is a seal on the TA input shaft also a larger one on the planet carrier. There is a cover on top of housing that can be removed to look at TA clutch but is hard to get to on Utility tractor.

I think what you're describing is drainage coming from the overflow holes, which are there to take care of an over-filled trasmission reservoir. I often see fluid there after having the tractor on a slope. If that's what it is, it's nothing to worry about.

Are you sure about that? I think those weep holes are there to let the excess oil out if that forward trans seal goes out.

I think there is a problem here.

Well, having been wrong once or twice before in life, it's possible. But I don't think so this time.

These weep hole are between the seasonal disconnect (T-shaped) plate (wet) and the front transmission fluid drain plug (wet) on the "middle plate" which is the position of the gear bringing the PTO power down from the main drive line (which needs to be lubricated). If you stick a wire in the drain hole(s), it goes straight up quite a ways, consistant with maintaining a fluid level. The dry, front compartment is for the main clutch, only, in a tractor with a TA, and it's drained by the "front" plate.

Loren: The hydraulic pump is on the right side of the engine and is connected with 2 pipe type oil lines to the reservoir under the seat. The lines are sealed with O'rings as well as the control valve assembles on the right side of the reservoir. A gasket seals the reservoir to the top of the housing. The dipstick is under the seat. If you remove the res. besure to inspect and clean the hyd. screen. Before you split it get a book or some advice from a tech. in your area.Good Luck, Ken

Thanks Ken. I remember seeing the pump up front now. What would be inside the bellhousing/trans case area that would be leaking hyd. oil? Ordered the manual a couple days ago. Loren

Your front tranny seal may be leaking. I have some seapage from the little cap around the zerk fitting on the right side of the tranny. The same fluid that's used in the hydro is used in the gearbox and differential. Therma-shift is recommended if you have a T/A. I'm swappng mine over to Amsoil ATH so stuff will last longer and the bucket will move faster in the winter.
