have been considering buying an international 504 manufactured in early sixties. this machine is a little rough and last ran about a year ago. owner
has invoices showing considerable work done on engine and hydraulics ($1,500-$1,800) before it was parked due to the owners health. the owner wants about a thousand dollars for it. i am interested in older tractors but not very knowledgable. if you guys know of any reason to stay away from this particular model or have any input at all i would appreciate it. also it has a front end loader on it.

I think you should leave your computer desk immediately and buy the tractor before someone else does.

The 504 diesel doesn't start very well. That would be a disadvantage on a loader tractor. However, how can you go wrong with a loader tractor that has had recent dealer repair, has modern hydraulics, and probably low hours under light duty. All this for $1000.

went and looked at the 504 again. after some fresh fuel and a battery it started right up. one brake was hung up but that was easy to free.
problem with the hydraulics that raise and lower the 3 pt. and controls the auxilliary hyd. the valve assembly had been removed and taken apart. for what purpose we dont know.looks like it might need a new one, again, not very knowledgable. one question someone might be able to answer, the exhaust on this machine comes out of the manifold and goes directlt down and comes out under the rear axle, the hood looks origanal and there is no hole for the exhaust there. also it has something called a torque amplifier. not sure how it is supposed to work.also found out the machine has power steering. overall i guess it doesnt look too bad, going to check on hydraulic part and probably go for it.

Torque amplifier? That's great! It's like splitting the gears. Where some manufacturers use hi-lo transmissions, IHC used the TA. Should you be using the tractor in a hard pull situation ie plowing, and it starts to bog down, just pull the TA. I have a 504 and it would be nice to have the TA on it, especially when I'm using the bushhog and trying to back up with the throttle in PTO position. That would help slow down the tractors ground speed.

What about brakes? Will yours lock the wheel to turn the tractor?
