I was just wondering how the TA you replaced in the 400 is doing? Does the new one free wheel when going down hill? I was told they all did but, I'm not that familiar with them. I'm about to replace mine and was unsure whether or not to replace it with another TA or not. Didn't you get it from Steel Wheel Ranch? I would appreciate any information you could give me. Thanks in advance, Todd.

The TA in my 400 is peachy keen. Have been using it quite a bit wile plowing and disking. Found that a TA does not help bald tires get more traction :-)
They just spin slower.
The only reason I replaced mine was that I was going to split the tractor any way. SO might as well. Resale value takes a big hit when the TA is out. I think if it was the only thing that needed a fix. I would not do it.
Its usefull but not a show stopper. Your tractor can still do every thing it was intended to do with out it.
Now it you have to split one for a clutch or some thing I would recomend replacing the rear engine seals on back as I did. You only want to do that once. SO you might as well get it all done.
Yes I got mine from Steel Wheel Ranch. $499 I think. Also $60 or so in seals, Not a bad deal if you do the work your self.

Thanks guys for the responses. My problem is the TA slips when pulling a hill in 4th & 5th at high RPMs. It stops and I get this loud whirring sound from the bowels of the tractor. As far as pulling a load, it does alright. Doesn't matter if the lever is back or forward, no change in speed, sound, or performance. I still use the tractor when I can, but one of these days she's going to stop and whir and not start off again. Thanks again, Todd.

I understand about the whirring sound if the TA handle is pulled back. You will be able to use it until a certain amout of pressure is put on the Ramp and roller. Then it would slip.
If its doing that in direct drive you may also have another problem. Maybe the TA clutch is shot also??? dont know getting past my skill level on these ta's with that. But there are many here who know 100 times more than me. I am sure they will chime in.

All of TAs on the older tractors freewheeled when it is pulled back. These included the 300, 400, and at least some of the 500 series tractors such as the 560, and the 660. If you are going down hill you want to have the torque pushed ahead.

The older TA's freewheeled when pulled back, and the older disc brakes were sometimes notorious for grabbing and or locking up, so the best caution is leave the torque ahead, start off a grade slowly, not letting the load get to pushing you out of control, and not hauling a bigger load than cay be safely stopped. In other words common sense might save your life, Harley
