Noise in SA final drive, or is it the tranny?

All,
Thanks for the great help in the past. Ever since I got my tractor about a year ago it's made a good bit of noise when in motion. It seems to me that the tranny makes a bit of noise (as I understand should be expected), but what worries me is the much louder 'growling' that I hear from somewhere in the proximity of the left final drive housing. Does that sound normal for a Super A, or do I need to start hunting for the problem?

Thanks,
Darren

If you can actually pinpoint the location, then there "may" be a problem. First change the fluid in the transmission and both final drive housings and take it from there. The one making the noise may just be low on fluid.

CNKS,
Thanks for the advice. I'll do as you say. The tranny fluid is new, though I am embarassed to admit that I haven't done the fluid in the final drives yet because my pans appear to lack drain or fill plugs (or they're just completely painted- and gooped-over.)

Darren, They don't have drain plugs in the final drive pans. You have to take them off to drain. You fill through the plug on the inside of the final drive casting. Roger

Roger,
I've looked high and low and cannot find a fill plug on that housing. Can I fill it through the cover that goes over where the planter gear is on the other side? That's the only place I can find that I can get access through.

Thanks,
Darren

Darren: The fill and level plug are the same and is between the two bottom holes on final drive where drawbar can mount on front side. It is a recessed plug about 1-1/4" and can be removed by a 1/2" drive square end.

Pay attention to the noise. A friend of mine didn't and parts within the left final drive came through the casting. Apparently the axle and upper shaft bearings can become so loose that cog teeth ride up on one another. Gets expensive. Jack the tractor rear wheel as it lifts from floor you can see if axle bearings are loose.

Hugh,
As always, your reply is most helpful. I've been cleaning about five decades of mud and grease off this tractor, so now that I know where to look I'm sure I'll find that plug. When I dropped the pan on that side I found only about 1/3 qt of pretty cruddy looking gear oil. I'm really hoping those bearings aren't shot.

I was very sorry to hear of your loss the other day. You and your family will be in my prayers.

in Christ,
Darren
